Review: Anti-Flag @ Knitting Factory, NYC on Wed.3/26

The latest MySpace secret show crept up at my favorite venue, with one of the best new political punk rock bands to hit the country in the past 15 years. Knitting Factory would host this event with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Anti-Flag and New Jersey act Static Radio.

I arrived to the venue, actually rushing, at 5pm, 3 hours before doors to surprisingly find roughly 10 people waiting outside. I hung out for a few minutes, before finding out that wristbands were being distributed for the show. I got one and walked around, waiting for my friend Walter to arrive. He would finally show up with one of his friends, Giselle, who is apparently into hardcore- pretty neat.

We entered the venue a few minutes after 8pm. Soon after, Static Radio would hit the stage. As they played their fast, short songs, Walter grabbed me to go dance around, which I of course partook in. At this point not very many kids were in the venue, which was seen when a huge space opened up. The band played a solid set that got me moving.

At 8:50pm, the members of Anti-Flag came on stage one by one to one to tear New York City up! They played “911 for Peace,” which was a total surprise, as well as “One Trillion Dollars,” “War Sucks, Let’s Party,” and “This is the End (For You My Friend)” off their last album, and “Underground Network.” They played some boring songs, which saw me and my friends off to the side recuperating from the craziness we involved ourselves in. The band performed a bunch of songs off their new album “The Bright Lights of America.” There was a fair amount of political preaching from Justin Sane, of course, he is a punk singer.

The ultimate highlight was during “Turncoat,” where I would crowd surf for the first time. It was such a rush being in the air with hands holding me up as the audience would push me to the front of the stage. Walter lifted me up, and I didn’t fall, well except when I landed on stage. I then jumped right back into the crowd, score for the stage dive. For a star that’s been to nearly 100 shows in her lifetime, it’s surprising this was my first interaction with the crowd like this. I’ll definitely do it again. It was fun.

Throughout the set, we all looked out for each other, danced together, grabbed each other, jumped up, raised our fists, sung and shouted out lyrics, clapped our hands, and had a good time. It was awesome seeing everyone, having a good time. Their encore was “Die for Your Government” and “The Press Corpse.”

Before walking out the venue, I was handed a limited edition lithograph of the show. It was pretty sweet. This show was such a release for me, with fun people, at my favorite venue, to sing and dance my heart out, not afraid of anything. It was this night that I realized that I could have good show moments with others.

My Two Sents CD Reviews

City and Colour- “Bring Me Your Love”

“Bring Me Your Love” is filled with beautiful acoustics and harmonica, heartfelt lyrics and lush vocals on Dallas Green of Alexisonfire's second solo album. Standout tracks include “Death of Me,” “Sleeping Sickness,” and “The Girl.”

Murder by Death- “Red of Tooth and Claw”

Murder by Death present a nice blend of indie rock, alt-country, and post-punk instrumentation with eerie yet strong vocals on "Red of Tooth and Claw." With cello and keyboard present, tracks like “Comin’ Home,” “Fuego!,” and “Ash” sound superb.

Anti-Flag to perform free show at Knitting Factory

Excitement filled my heart as I heard that the political punk band Anti-Flag would be performing a Myspace Secret Show at my favorite venue, Knitting Factory in New York City this Wednesday. They'll be performing with Static Radio. All I have to do is find someone to go with, someone who’s willing to wait in line for a few hours. I want to get there early to ensure entrance since it's first come, first serve. The last time I saw Anti-Flag was last year when they played a sold out show with Alexisonfire and Big D and Kids Table at Irving Plaza. Their new album “The Bright Lights of American” comes out April 1. It’s available for pre-order here and here.

The Champagne Charade @ The Iron Monkey in Jersey City on 3/22

The passion that packed the small lounge-esque restaurant of The Iron Monkey in Jersey City warmed the room, literally, as eager fans, friends, family and familiar faces waited in anticipation of two New Jersey locals.

It was a star studded line-up featuring the beauties Eddie, Luis, John, Jose and Meghan of Fighting Over Shotgun and Chris Crypts, Nicky Charade, Kaedon Grey, Bobbie Venom and Saetia LaReoux of The Champagne Charade, who played their first show and headlined the night.

Fighting Over Shotgun, from Hoboken, NJ brought rockin’ arrangements, some Latin flavor, heavy tinged guitar, screaming and melodic vocals and plenty of up close and personal moments with hugs included from Meghan, in their 30 minute set. Meghan opened ACapella, which highlighted her sweet voice. She would descend into a frenzy as she moved from left to right and back and front, edging close to bands members and the drums She even ripped her heart out on the floor as she sang with such conviction.

The Champagne Charade from north Jersey got on at 12:15am. The drum set took up half the floor space, proving how tiny this place really was. As Saetia graced the stage in her cut up black Guns n Roses tee, blue skirt, fish nets and fiery red hair the beauty of her voice compelled me to sing. The band performed four songs off their “Takeover” EP and two news ones, which they hope to record next month. The songs relentlessly blared loud with ripping guitar licks. The band closed with "Lipstick Scars" as Ms. LaReoux sang "Can you take the pain away from ME, will you succeed?," the night ended too shortly and it was already the next day.

Both bands poured their heart into the music and expressed their thanks, happiness and love for everyone coming out. The vibe of the show was akin to that of a basement show, intimate, passionate, and filled with loved ones and fans of music- the way a true local show should be.
