CMJ: Tuesday Plans

Today I'm off to NYC to get my CMJ badge at 9am. Then, catch a few panels and then a press meet n greet with the folks from UWire. Afterwards I'll be heading to Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ to see An Horse & Jessica Lea Mayfield, 8:30 p.m. $10.

The Syndicate Party

The Syndicate hosted its 10th Conflict of Interest Party, tonight (10/20) at Rebel in NYC. With three floors, free vitamin water and goody bags, dancing on two levels, and Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, Rival Schools, and ...Trail of Dead, the night would prove to be fun and exciting.

This was an exclusive event tailored to music industry folks, i.e. friends of the Syndicate and various bands. It was a great pre-CMJ treat that left me in anticipation for what's to come this week.

CMJ: Monotonix playing 5 +shows this week

The always entertaining and rockin' 3-piece from Israel, Monotonix make its return to NY this week for CMJ.

Knitting Factory, Friday, Oct. 24, 1 a.m.
The Studio at Webster Hall, Friday, Oct. 24, 3 a.m.
Music Hall of Williamsburg, Saturday, Oct. 25, 5 p.m.
Bender Theater at Gramercy, Saturday, Oct. 25, 9:30 p.m.
Metropolitan Pavilion, Sunday, Oct. 26, 2 p.m.+ 3 more sometime this week.

Star Beat conducted an e-mail interview with guitarist Yonatan. Here's what he had to say:

Monotonix, first you guys seriously have one of the best live shows I have ever seen and have some of the most amazing energy. I was at the Bowery Ballroom during the summer when you played with Valient Thorr and it was an eye opening experience. It gave me chills. So, how do you do it? Night after night just play with all the antics you have?

Every venue is different, every audience is different. The fact that we play on the floor and get personal with the crowd makes every night a different experience for us.

Why all the antic and crazy acts?

I don't know. It's 2008, it's boring to just stand there and play. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath did that already.
But seriously, it gives people in the audience a feeling they are free to do anything they want. We like that.

How do fans normally react when they see the band live? Do you expect their reaction?

Some audiences are wilder and some are more reserved. I think before the show every one of us kinda scans the room and anticipates their reaction so we'd know if we need to devote more time to playing our instruments or protecting ourselves... Some audiences are unpredictable though. It's fun.

What keeps you going? It seems like you never stop tour

Lots of sleep, Redbull.
We're taking a break after this tour to write a new record. We're not gonna tour for 4 months. That's the longest break we had since we started. We are excited about getting time to finally work on new songs. We did nothing but tour in the last 2 years.

How was the tour with Silver Jews?

Was great. David is really cool for taking us to support them. Some people raised their eyebrows about the weird combination between the two bands. But I think the differences between the bands made the tour unique and special.

You'll be playing a few CMJ Music Marathon shows in New York soon. Are you particularly excited for those showcases?

We're playing 8 shows in 3 days, which is not easy physically, so we're more concentrated on staying healthy. It's kind of a challenge.
Yeah, shows should be fun. NY is wild.

In particular, is the Panache showcase at Knitting Factory with The Mae Shi, An Alabatross, Fiasco, and many more. This seems like a perfect show for the band and ya'll are headlining. That's awesome.

Yeah we love Panache, Michelle and all these bands.

I know you play NY often. How is it playing in the Big Apple?

I think we played NY 15 times this year at least.
We love it, it's one of the funnest cities for us. We feel the audience is very open for new experiences and taking it to the next level.

When do you guys finally go home?

We're going to the U.K after this, then November 17th we go home for a while.

When are we going to get new music?

We're gonna spend the winter in New Orleans writing new songs and then record them in California in the spring. We are very excited. We already have little ideas and a couple of new songs, it's gonna be different than the last EP. But I guess all bands say that.

Thanks

Yonatan

From Todd P:
[ DILLINGER 4 ]
"Dillinger Four is an influential American punk rock band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formed in 1994. Current members are Lane "Monkey Hustle" Pederson (drums), Billy Morissette (guitar, vocals), Erik Funk (guitar, vocals), and Patrick "St. Paddy" Costello (bass, vocals.) Funk co-owns the Triple Rock Social Club, a popular bar and music venue in Minneapolis." - Wikipedia

[ THE ERGS ]
grungy pop punk infused with a healthy dose of Hüsker Dü and Replacements era Minneapolis. Great songs, savvy players, smart angst. From New Jersey. Catch them now, because this is their last show ever in New York City.
-- MYSPACE / MP3s --> http://myspace.com/theergs

[ THE MEASURE ]
coed punk rock pop from New Brunswick. "Can you bottle exuberance? Just sheer joy? Can it be dabbed behind your ear like a perfume? It sure as hell can be captured on vinyl and The Measure's got its number: über-earnest, let's-get-this-shit-right, dual vocals DIY punk that’s disregarding paint-by-numberisms... Like a supercharged Discount? Like watching otters magically frolic and play instruments? Like the best basement show, glasses fogged, windows steamed? Contagious? Yes, yes, and yes." – Todd Taylor @ Razorcake

[ CARNAL KNOWLEDGE ]
hardcore punk from 4 Brooklyn women. "The riffs are crazy catchy like early-era Reagan Youth with dashes of modern influences I can't put my finger on. They accomplish the ever so difficult task of mid-tempo punk/hardcore without falling victim to boredom. Some of the angriest most heartfelt lyrics I've read from a new band in a long time that touch on a wide variety of subjects ranging from politics to personal relationships. I had the chance to see this band live and they don't disappoint. Don't sleep on this." - Maximum Rocknroll. Their 2nd to last show ever.

Peculiar Gentlemen- Album Review+Performing tonight at Crash Mansion, NY

One Brooklyn based band brings the good shit and get you groovin' and dancin' with its new release "The Difference." This sexy NY sextet, Peculiar Gentlemen bring an album complete with sweet, jump, jive, sing along dance songs with a '60s oldies feel, rap elements, a soul, blues, and even reggae vibe and three female backing vocals for one of the hottest self released efforts I've ever heard. The bass explodes and is some of the hottest I’ve heard.

Tonight, Peculiar Gentlemen perform a nasty set with Badman at Crash Mansion, 199 Bowery, NY, 9pm.

The name of lead vocalist “Sweet” Willy Jive, even gives it away. He gets you moving with his smooth, soulful vocals. Then there’s guitarist e-beats singing and rapping. The three backing vocalists, the PG3s, Leslie, Nailah, and Sara bring their own style and are equally and nicely featured on the album.

Some of the hot tracks are “Nasty,” “Ashamed,” “The Part that I love featuring Badman,” and “Tape Machine.”

“Tape Machine,” starts with some keys and continues jamming to get your head bobbin’, you singin’, and toes tappin’. “Difference,” is more of a rap song with singing and some sweet beats.

Check out these Brooklyn cats! They are rollin' with hot tunes and remind you of the good, old school jams.

Upcoming Peculiar Gentlemen Dates:

---> TONIGHT! Oct 8 New York, NY @ Crash Mansion (with Badman)
Oct 22 Brooklyn, NY @ Surfriders (CMJ Showcase)
Oct 25 Alton, MA @ O'Brien's
Oct 30 New York, NY @ The Delancey
Oct 31 Providence, RI @ AS220 (Halloween Party with Badman)
Nov 29 New York, NY @ Rehab (with Nite Club and Smash Mechanics)
Dec 19 Brooklyn, NY @ Jalopy (with Sugarshack Burlesque)

Bayside Fall Tour Dates+Shudder Album Review

Today Bayside is in Cleveland, Ohio for the start of “The Involuntary Movement Tour” with Valancia, The Matches, and The Status. The tour is in support of the band’s new studio album, “Shudder,” release last week. The band also released “Live at the Social Club.” The band play The Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza on November 11, Philly’s Trocadero on November 15, and New Jersey’s Asbury Park on November 16. Tickets for NYC here, for PA here, and for NJ here.

“Shudder” is a great alternative-punk release, but with some downfalls. The too emo lyrics, like “I’m a failure, I’m a freak,” on “I Can’t Go On,” is only a taste of the high school loner lyrics you’ll get. Granted a bunch of the lyrics are easily relatable to any school kid. It does provide an outlet in that regard, but it still seems the band is touching on topics too far from their scopes four albums later. The single, “No One Understands,” as well as “Boy,” and “A Call to Arms,” are some of the best on the album. On “Moceanu,” Raneiri sings, “You attitude is old,” ha. Well, spelling out words in a song is lame. The song would be ok, if there wasn’t the spelling.

But, nothing beats a Bayside performance. The band has always been tight every time I’ve seen them and they play songs from each of their releases, including its acoustic cd. Check out tour dates below.
