Kevin Devine to release new cd in April, headline tour in works

Carnival by Kevin Devine

LOS ANGELES, February 11, 2009 - "Ranging from a whispered hum to a cathartic holler and boiling over with his skillful wordsmithery, Kevin Devine & The Goddamn Band's Brother's Blood will be released April 28 via Favorite Gentlemen Recordings. The first for the label and the fifth album in Devine's impressive oeuvre, the LP furthers his adventures in exploring new stylistic territory and reflects the diverse talent and contributions of his musical handymen, The Goddamn Band.

Testament to Devine's sonic ambidexterity, Brother's Blood showcases the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter's versatility and range, one that has afforded him the unique privilege of capturing the hearts of fans of a variety of genres. Case in point, in the last two years he's played nearly 600 shows with a dizzying mix of artists ranging from Rachel Yamagata to She & Him and the All-American Rejects to Manchester Orchestra. That's in addition to his packed-out headline gigs and his guest appearances with friends Brand New and Okkervil River during their individual sets at Lollapalooza 2008.

Just as much as Devine loves the road he has an equal fondness for the studio, and in the midst of all his globetrotting, he cooked up Brother's Blood. A confident mission statement about conscience, culture and personality, the album is resounding evidence of his impressive maturation as musician. Recorded at Williamsburg Headgear Studios with his Goddamn Band (Brian Bonz on keys & percussion, Chris Bracco on bass, Mike Skinner on drums, Russell Smith on guitar, and Mike Strandberg on guitar), Devine deliberately ceded more control of arrangement to his players, hoping to affect a more live, full-band feel for the first time on record.

Lead single "I Could Be With Anyone" is a charging and hook-heavy pop song equally indebted to The Cars and Superchunk while the title track is a massive and dynamic song fueled by epic guitar freakouts in the vein of Neil Young and Built To Spill. Meanwhile, opener "All Of Everything, Erased" shows off Devine's quieter side as he lays a bed of nimble and rhythmic finger-picking and vividly describes a world fed up with humanity. "Fever Moon" is a sultry, Latin-influenced meditation on lust and its consequences that wouldn't seem out of place on a 1970s Leonard Cohen album.

While Devine and co. are gearing back up for the road, they'll offer a sneak peak into the new material this March at SXSW. They will celebrate the album's arrival with a hometown show at NYC's Bowery Ballroom Friday, April 24 with a full headline tour to follow shortly after."

Star Beat Music also spoke with Aaron of the Saddest Landscape about reuniting, the live show, and the new release. Hit "read more" for the interview.

Interview with Aaron of TSL:
Star Beat: Why did you decide to do a string of reunion dates?
Ok, apologies in advance because this is going to be a really long answer haha...So,

Aaron: Andy (tsl singer/guitarist) and me play in another band these days called Her Breath on Glass. Since we obviously still play together, it's always kind of something that's been in the back of our minds about playing some saddest landscape shows too, but it's never really been an option until now because some other original members weren't interested in playing anymore and it's always been a little difficult to get together and do things because of the distance factor (Andy lives in Boston/I live in NYC, and throughout the history of the band none of us ever really lived in the same state). But... Her Breath on Glass did a European tour this past summer and a few of the kids putting on the shows asked us if there's anyway saddest landscape could play a few shows as well. Since it was only the two of us going over, we didn't think there was anyway it was possible at first. But, some of the guys in the band Merkit who we did the tour with were saddest landscape fans and Nevin and John from the band ended up learning a few songs on bass so we could do it. We played two shows, it was a lot of fun, and kids seemed to be into it. Now, at the same time, kids kept on coming up to us and asking why our discography wasn't available on vinyl. (Slave Union Records released our discography on double CD two years ago) but people seemed to generally want it available on wax...

So, fast forward a few months...we were able to make the vinyl discography release happen and with the gears turning, we decided that we really wanted to add some extra content to it as all the songs had been available for a little while already on CD. We were originally going to do a bonus 7" with unreleased stuff on it like live songs and some alternative versions of songs. But, when it came down to it, we just didn't think the extra stuff we had was up to par to release. As luck would have it, me and a friend from my job had been talking about doing a hardcore band for fun. He's an awesome dude, a great musician (used to play guitar in the band hidden in plain view) and we have pretty much the exact same taste in music. I asked him (mike) if he'd have any interest in trying his hand at bass and playing with us for fun and luckily he was down. The first day we played together we came up with a brand new song and really gelled playing together. So much fun that we were like fuck it, let's finally play a few saddest landscape shows. And that leads us to now and this weekend of shows!

SB: Is there a Boston show coming together?
A: We have been working very hard on it (along with a few very awesome/generous promoters in the Boston area who have been cool enough to dedicate their time to help us out). We're hoping to have something solidified in the next few days and we'll be sure to let everyone know A.S.A.P. when we have the details.

SB: What can fans expect when they see you live?
A: Damn. Tough question. Probably going to sound like a generic answer, but I would say you can expect a passionate and heartfelt set from a few music dorks who have a lot of fun playing their songs and are super appreciative that kids have and still do take something away from our music. Remember, this is going to be our first shows together in like 4 years so please take it easy on us if we're a little rusty haha.

SB: Why are you going out with Trophy Scars?
A: The guys in Trophy Scars are some of my best friends. We grew up together and have played in bands together and I'm just a huge fan of their music. They're hands down one of my favorite bands. We've always talked about playing some shows together in some capacity, plus oddly enough (or at least odd to me because I don't think our bands sound anything alike) a lot of our fans are really into them and vice versa.

SB: Tell me about your new release.
A: It's our entire discography on double gatefold vinyl with a bonus 7" with two brand new recordings (one is our first new song in 3+ years and the other is a modern life is war cover). You can find more info about it here: myspace.com/thesaddestlandscape or here: http://tslhbog.bigcartel.com

SB: Do you have anything else to say?
A: Please check out Trophy Scars (myspace.com/trophyscars)... and if you can make it out to any of the reunion shows, please be sure to come say hey. Many thanks to Star for askin me to answer these questions!
