Female voices debunk stereotypes in music and discuss gender
The band name confusion
Vivian Girls. Morning After Girls. Theoretical Girls. Parenthetical Girls. Brazilian Girls. U.S. Girls. Shiragirl. GIRLS. WOMEN. Screaming Females.
Blogger Abbey Braden on Psychopedia.com pointed out that there are lots of new bands with a reference to ‘girl’ in their name, but does this mean more females in music? Maybe. But three of these 10 bands don’t have a female in the band.
Morning After Girls, Screaming Females, Vivian Girls, and Shiragirl explain their band name.
“People are very hasty to label something, and they really do believe everything they read,” Morning After Girls said on Psychopedia.Com. “I've always been interested in human beings’ tendency to take for granted ‘a priori’ meanings and definitions of words or a group of words. So, yes, many people do indeed do a double take [trying to find a female in the band]. But c'mon people, you can do better than that.”
Marissa Paternoster of New Brunswick, New Jersey’s Screaming Females said that her band’s name doesn’t mean anything in particular.
“We named our band after a random line in a book of poetry,” she said. Phonetically it sounds cool, it’s simple. It didn't have any kind of weird connotation that made us uncomfortable. To me Screaming Females means a rock ‘n roll band. I guess the first time you hear it you take it literally, as I am a screaming female or it’s an awkward name because I scream. I don't think I screamed ever, when the band first started, but at the time I was still female,” she said with a laugh. “People misinterpret it as a literal translation of what we are, when there’s one screaming female, and I definitely don't want all the attention on me because of a weird coincidence.”
Vivian Girls named their band after Henry Darger's Vivian Girls, the band notes on Braden’s blog entry, who “were actually girls with penises, so us naming our band after them is a pretty similar thing to male bands naming themselves Women or Girls.”
Shiragirl originally came from lead singer Shira’s name. Her name means “song” in Hebrew and also refers to “princess of power,” from the 1985 television series, She-Ra.
“A lot of people find it to be an empowering name,” she said. “I wanted a website and that’s one of the websites that was available. People started calling me Shiragirl, so it started organically, then I got into an all girl band and we stayed with the name. It’s telling of who we are. I was into riot grrrl, so it fits with that. I think that the word ‘girl’ doesn’t have to mean cheesy or weak, I think it can be an empowering thing.”

Women’s History Month Special Report: Part I
Female voices debunk stereotypes in music and discuss gender
By: Star Child
March celebrates Women’s History Month, a time where we look at the accomplishes of women in the fields of literature, politics, sociology, and so fourth, but I feel that we overlook musicians, particularly in rock music, who have shaped and paved a way for more females to come into the scene. It seems we brush over this. In this piece we hear from females in rock, punk, and hip hop music, as well as a music professor, book author, and riot grrrl enthusiast about the struggles women face, stereotypes, gender equality, and feminism, which sheds light on the importance of understanding and learning about Women’s History Month.
A little history & Women’s History Month
Since the origins of rock n’ roll, female musicians have made some headway. Men first started playing blues and jazz music, with females really focused on singing in groups, as opposed to playing instruments. But as time went by, more females started playing rock music and were picking up instruments. It’s interesting how far we’ve come in rock music and although we often don’t hear about many women rockers, there certainly are many, you just have to be proactive about seeking out the bands because they’re not in the forefront of the media and many are unsigned, d.i.y. spirited bands like Screaming Females, Shiragirl, and Throwing Muses who we talk to later.
Seton Hall University adjunct music professor, guitarist and vocalist Carol Hamersma says:
“I think it’s really important that the women who playing, are given a little exposure because it’s all about role models for young girls and women. You get the idea, ‘oh this is something I can do’ because at first women were seen primarily as vocalists, then pianists, keyboardists. Those were early acceptable role models for women. But now you see women really trying everything.”
Shira of the punk/hip hop group, Shiragirl thinks Women’s History Month is a great idea.
“I think anything helps as far as awareness and visibility,” she said. “You hear a lot more about Black History Month then you do about Women’s History Month. It’s not very well publicized or talked about it seems. I think it’s a great time to bring up awareness for charity causes, like women’s cancer. I don’t have anything against it. A lot of people might say, ‘oh, well, why do we need a month, is every other month men’s month?,’ but it never hurts to have a platform to discuss things.”
Lead singer/guitarist Kristia Moya of Exit She Calls thinks it’s unfair that Women’s History Month is not mentioned a lot. She said that when she was in high school “it wasn’t really brought up a lot and I think it should be, because it’s supposed to remind me of the accomplishments that women have made in the past and present, which helps make it possible for us to do the same for our future generation.”
Guitarist and vocalist Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave has a similar reaction.
“I certainly do get angry and bitter historically,” she said. “I would love for things to be different already and perfect for women now. I would love for us all to be considered humans and not our gender.”
“I am often compared to Patti Smith and Sylvia Plath, which is crazy to me. I think it’s very sexist. I have nothing to do with either of those people, taken as people, but because they’re my gender they group us together, as if that’s really all you need in order to be compared to someone is to have a gender in common. I can appreciate it if we need a month to start focusing on historical problems; say, ‘ok this is what needs change ultimately’.”
Part II on the band name confusion coming tonight at 5:30pm.

EXIT SHE CALLS played Angels & Kings, free shows every Friday
The dark, small, lounge bar at Angels and Kings NYC was nicely suited and seated for a 2 hour acoustic show featuring Exit She Calls, For the Foxes, and Beyond Hope Lies.
Around 8:15pm Bergen County, New Jersey's Exit She Calls played a lush set filled with songs singer Kristia Moya wrote before her band, like "Lips of Loveliness" and "I am." Last week they had rocked Newark's KilKenny Alehouse, even throwing in a New Found Glory cover. So, it was nice to hear a lot of the electric songs raw this evening. While they didn't play a cover this time, it was still a nice vibe. They reminded me of Lemuria and Tokyo Rose- nice groove, melodic, and sweet lyrics. The band's playing another acoustic show at the Hot Topic in Elizabeth, NJ on May 22.
Next was For the Foxes, who performed a fun, rock keyboard laden set. It was great to see a pop/rock band with a keyboard from Jersey. They also had a tambourine. They dedicated their last song to everyone that loves pizza, the song was about pizza. Classic. Later I ventured down Ave A to find the $1 pizza place the band had talked about, tasty. They had energy that made me smile and move in my sit.
Closing the night was Beyond Hope Lies. This set was a disappointment, to say the least. The vocals were off, the screams seemed unnecessary and were annoying, and the music and lyrics weren't compelling. My ears hurt. Their myspace songs aren't that bad, but something was off with this band live and acoustic.
If you're looking for a nice night out, Angels and Kings has acoustic shows every Friday night. It's always free admission, 21+.

Show Recaps: Handsome Furs, Bishop Allen, Alyson Greenfield, Moving Mountains
Handsome Furs "Legal Tender"
Handsome Furs @ Mercury Lounge, NYC 3/6/09
Handsome Furs played a sold out show last Friday night at Mercury Lounge in New York City with this duo with an odd band name and Iran. The duo were in the vein of Handsome Furs, but the girl took the lead of vocals, rather than the guy. They made me dance and were pretty good, but their stage presence was far from special. After they played I noticed Dan and Alexi from Handsome Furs hanging out in the back, so I said hi and they were really nice. I mentioned how I saw them in Austin last year at SXSW. They signed stuff for me. Iran were next and played a very sweet rock set. They were great, but didn't fit the bill that well. The Canadian duo was up next, making their way on stage at around 11pm. They kicked it off with "Legal Tender" and played a bunch of songs off of Face Control, like "Evangeline," "Talking Hotel Arbat Blues," and "Passport Kontrol." Throughout the set, they gave away copies of their cds because their label wouldn't let them sell it out it before its official release date. Fans had to answer trivia questions to receive one, which was fun. I loved how Dan and Alexi moved while they were and how they'd turn to each other, they had a great connection and Alexi was smiling like crazy throughout the set. The encore was "I'm Confused" and I "Sing! Captain." It was a sweet show, that ran pretty late, but that's expected-I had a great time.
Bishop Allen @ Other Music, NYC 3/10/09
My friends from Florida were in town, so they wanted to check out a free show somewhere. Luckily Brooklyn's Bishop Allen would be performing a record release show. They performed songs off "Grrr..." They played a pretty good 30 minute of folk/rock. I had never heard of them before and was pleased. My friends seemed to enjoy them as well.
Alyson Greenfield @ The American Folk Art Museum, NYC 3/13/09
Alyson Greenfield played a free show, as part of the Free Music Fridays at the museum. She played with a mini casio keyboard, acoustic guitar, and xylophone (for one song). Greenfield delivered a nice set, filled with great stories. One was about being in school. Another was about trying to find a place to live in NYC after she quit her job working for Madonna, kinda sorta. This was the number where she played on the xylophone given to her by a friend. Two notable songs were, "Tuscaloosa," where the trees look like bones and "Understand the Sky." She closed with a song she wrote in middle school. Overall, great vibe.
Moving Mountains @ Retox, Brooklyn 3/13/09
Moving Mountains performed at a house space and sadly didn't move me as much as I would've liked. The singer, Greg, announced that the PA system was so soft, so the vocals weren't going to come in well. This was very disappointing because it's the vocals that help make their music so great. You could barely hear his voice, which bummed me out. Thankfully, they played "Cover the Roots Lower the Stems," which had a bunch of people rockin'. They're playing a show with An Horse & The Appleseed Cast in Connecticut next month, which should be pretty great.

The Bouncing Souls to Perform Acoustic @ Generation Records, NYC on April 19
Generation Records is proud to announce that New Jersey's favorite punk band, The Bouncing Souls will be playing a special, acoustic in-store on April 18th, in celebration of Record Store Day.
All you need to do to get in is buy a copy of the Souls' "20th Anniversary Volume 1" 7-inch from us on the day of the show. We will have the solid maroon pressing (only 1000 made!) for sale. The 7-inch will be $5. We will NOT be selling the 7-inch before the 18th, only the day of the show.
The show will start at 2 P.M. Space will be extremely limited so spots will only be available on a first come, first serve basis. Anyone that's been to our in-stores in the past knows it gets pretty packed in our basement, so we'd recommend getting here early.
For further updates, keep checking Generation Records' Myspace (myspace.com/generationrecordsnyc)
The Bouncing Souls also perform at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ on May 9. Opening is Loved Ones, Black President, and Detournement.

New Brunswick’s The Measure [SA] reminds us of the true meaning of inspiration with their new 12” EP Songs About People…and Fruit N’ Shit. An incredible listen, Songs About People…and Fruit N’ Shit captures the essence of the band with driving riffs, memorable melodies, and sing-a-longs fit for the basement nearest you. Songs like “Revisionist” and “Hello Bastards” exemplify what punk rock should be—raw, powerful, and unyielding. Meanwhile, “How To Steal a Million” manages to steal your heart, embracing desperation, tenderness, and, above all, passion. Recorded at Technical Ecstasy Studios by Chris Pierce, Songs About People…and Fruit N’ Shit will become a staple in your collection next to Milo Goes to College and My Brain Hurts.
