Screaming Females @ Meat Town USA 6/28/09, photos, video

Screaming Females @ Meat Town USA, 6/28/09

It was less than a month that I saw Screaming Females perform at Maxwell's, but I had to head to New Brunswick for one last home town show at Meat Town USA, before the band opens for Jay Reatard at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the Dead Weather, and tours the west coast with Shellshag. It was my tenth time seeing the band and fourth time at Meat Town. Simply put. They rock. This band just keeps producing good music. Music that makes you move and keeps me coming back. Despite the ridiculously hot basement, the band managed to play 7 songs. They kicked off it right at 9:05pm with four new songs off, Power Move: "Skull," "Bell," "Lights Out," and "Buried in the Nude." After, they went into two oldies: "No Being Disgusting" and "Dinosaurs," before closing with a new song called "Squana," according to the setlist. Unfortunately, I was in the back, so I could not see the band. Nonetheless, it was a good time.

I must not forget the awesome opening bands all featuring only two members, except opener R.S.O., who had a keyboardist. Interestingly, the three bands all had a punk/heavy southern rock, sludgy rock n' roll sound to them. Trophy Wife from Washington DC featured a drummer and singer/guitarist. They were pretty great. Then, The Curtains of Night from North Carolina had a heavy fucking groove sound for just two members. It was awesome and great to head bang and see good playing. Myself and folks around me, including Marissa of Screaming Females were headbanging. It was pretty awesome being surrounded by all these people, enjoying some good rock on a Sunday night.

Were you there? What did you think?

Lemuria played in New Brunswick with Cheap Girls, Full of Fancy, and more, photos/video

Lemuria "Pants" @ America, New Brunswick 6/23/09

Lemuria returned from the U.K. with a show at the America house in Hub City. This was the third house show I’ve been to. Meat Town USA and Death City usually carry the show in town, so it was exciting to go to somewhere new. By the time opener, Jeff Erg went on around 7pm, the room was packed with people. I managed to squeeze up front. He played a few sweet acoustic songs. Full of Fancy was up next with a fun, punk set. You Without Teeth, a duo from New Brunswick played an interesting set of songs that sounded like a mix of screamo and punk. Valens were the heaviest band of the night, playing a brutal hardcore set. Changing the pace was Cheap Girls from Lansing, MI. They had the crowd moving and dancing around. They sounded like some 90s rock band I can't put my tongue on. I thoroughly enjoyed the set. It was nice, sweet pop rock.

Finally, around 10:15pm Lemuria made their way on the floor. They played at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 7. It looked like the band wouldn't be coming around again, but with the help of some friends this show was organized. That's what great about these kind of shows. There's a lot of community involved. The shows may be a little hush hush, but it's exclusive. It's word of mouth and a bit of promotion. Despite this show being announced just a few days before, the room was filled with eager kids who wanted music. Lemuria played a fast set squeezing in "Hour," "Pants," "Dog," "Get Some Sleep," and "Mechanical," "Lipstick" and even a new song. It was a great set and it was cool seeing everyone having fun.

Make sure to check out other shows happening in New Brunswick here.

Will Dailey releases new EP's, performing at Maxwell's in Hoboken this Sunday

It may not be free music, but it is a lot of music to release in one year. For singer-songwriter Will Dailey, it seems making music comes easily. I guess when you have a theme and with some many issues going on in the world, it’s easy to be inspired. Starting this month Dailey will be releasing music every three months until the end of the year. It’s refreshing that a musician feels passionate enough to release that much music. It gives fans something to look forward to.

This Boston singer/songwriter released Torrent 1 and 2, a combination of two EP’s earlier this month. The first is Fashion of Distraction, influenced by ‘60s and ‘70s music, particularly the Byrds. Roger McGuinn actually appears on “Peace of Mind.” The other EP is By the Blue Hills, a collection of songs saluting Boston and Will’s musical family there, featuring cameos from Boston luminaries and Dailey friends Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo), Tanya Donelly (Belly, Throwing Muses), Elliott Easton (The Cars), Tim Brennan (Dropkick Murphy’s) and local fixtures Duke Levine and Sean Staples.

Sweet, lovely, but often serious Dailey’s songs take an easy flow, but his consistency makes his songs shine. They are straightforward and nice to hear. The songs are ones that uplift, make you think, and calm down. Standout tracks include “Never Be Your Baby,” “Love Is One the Way,” and “Too Long.”

Mr. Dailey performs a headlining show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ this Father’s Day, June 21st with Jon Robert, Nick Howard, and Anthony Melillo . The show is $8 in advance, $10 at the door which open at 7:30p.m. This can be a nice Father’s Day treat for dad. Maxwell’s is a restaurant where you can find a number of yummy entries and appetizers, then after head to the show in intimate back space to hear these songwriters mellow is out with rock and acoustic sets, you and dad can enjoy. The room has some sitting area on the side, but it’s mainly standing room only. Advance tickets are available here.

"I Could Be With Anyone"

All videos by Star Beat
Kevin Devine closed his 6-week long tour in support "Brother's Blood" with a stop at Music Hall of Williamsburg. He performed with over 2 hours filling the set with plenty of songs off the new album like "Carnival," Hand of God," and "I Could be With Anyone," plus "Refugees," "Longer That I'm Out Here" and "Buried by the Buzz." Kevin has a way of eliciting emotion like no other band I've seen. He started acoustic with "Ballgame," a song he usually closes with. But it started off the evening quite nicely. The song gave me goosebumps and made me teary eyed. For the most part all you could hear was his beautiful voice crackle and his voice was so strong. His band played wonderfully and openers Miniature Tigers and Brian Bonz were tight.

In an update posted today, Mr. Devine will announced that he will perform at LOLLAPALOOZA on August 7th in Chicago. Before then he'll be in the U.K. performing with Brand New and has a string of solo dates. His t-shirts are also available at Hot Topic's across New Jersey and New York.

Screaming Females @ Maxwell's 5-30-09 Recap

Screaming Females returned to Maxwell's from their east coast tour, performing with Shellshag, Pregnant, and Mimi and Christian. The set included songs off Power Move like "Buried in the Nude," "Starving Dog," and "Lights Out," plus two new songs, and oldie "Fun." It was an impressive set and the crowd went wild. One guy even tried to crowd surf and there was a dude dancing and jumping with someone on his back. This band is fun and groovy, there's no doubt about that. The band will be in the area several times before they head on tour with Jack White of the White Stripes new band The Dead Weather.

You can see them this Friday at Public Assembly in Brooklyn, June 20 at The Court Tavern in New Brunswick, NJ, June 25 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, or June 28 at Meat Town USA in New Brunswick, NJ.
