Kimya Dawson, The First Unitarian Church, April 5

I ventured all the way to Philly for my first trip to the city with Maria to see Kimya Dawson play at the famous first Unitarian church. Doors opened much later than expected and the long line was quite long, but we would soon make our way into the church. We managed to get a decent spot on the right side.

The first act up was apparently French and not too bad, though not understanding what they were saying was rough. It was their first show to.

Next was Kimya’s sweet heart, Angelo Spencer. He did a fine job, though I wasn’t familiar with his material.

Kimya would soon be up to play a grand 22 set, 23 if you include her abbreviated version of “Amazing Grace” toward the end of her set. But she managed to play a diverse mix which drew from all of her records including her upcoming children’s CD, “AlphaButt.” I enjoyed her introduction to the songs and the sincerity and simplicity of her music. Even so her music is powerful and message/ story oriented. Her voice is very childlike to and soft spoken. Toward the end of her set she let Matty Pop Tart perform two songs. Lyrically the songs were great, but his vocal weren’t. Kimya played a great set to a sold out crowd in a seated church show, an interesting affair for me.
