Star Beat conducted an e-mail interview with guitarist Yonatan. Here's what he had to say:
Monotonix, first you guys seriously have one of the best live shows I have ever seen and have some of the most amazing energy. I was at the Bowery Ballroom during the summer when you played with Valient Thorr and it was an eye opening experience. It gave me chills. So, how do you do it? Night after night just play with all the antics you have?
Every venue is different, every audience is different. The fact that we play on the floor and get personal with the crowd makes every night a different experience for us.
Why all the antic and crazy acts?
I don't know. It's 2008, it's boring to just stand there and play. Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath did that already.
But seriously, it gives people in the audience a feeling they are free to do anything they want. We like that.
How do fans normally react when they see the band live? Do you expect their reaction?
Some audiences are wilder and some are more reserved. I think before the show every one of us kinda scans the room and anticipates their reaction so we'd know if we need to devote more time to playing our instruments or protecting ourselves... Some audiences are unpredictable though. It's fun.
What keeps you going? It seems like you never stop tour
Lots of sleep, Redbull.
We're taking a break after this tour to write a new record. We're not gonna tour for 4 months. That's the longest break we had since we started. We are excited about getting time to finally work on new songs. We did nothing but tour in the last 2 years.
How was the tour with Silver Jews?
Was great. David is really cool for taking us to support them. Some people raised their eyebrows about the weird combination between the two bands. But I think the differences between the bands made the tour unique and special.
You'll be playing a few CMJ Music Marathon shows in New York soon. Are you particularly excited for those showcases?
We're playing 8 shows in 3 days, which is not easy physically, so we're more concentrated on staying healthy. It's kind of a challenge.
Yeah, shows should be fun. NY is wild.
In particular, is the Panache showcase at Knitting Factory with The Mae Shi, An Alabatross, Fiasco, and many more. This seems like a perfect show for the band and ya'll are headlining. That's awesome.
Yeah we love Panache, Michelle and all these bands.
I know you play NY often. How is it playing in the Big Apple?
I think we played NY 15 times this year at least.
We love it, it's one of the funnest cities for us. We feel the audience is very open for new experiences and taking it to the next level.
When do you guys finally go home?
We're going to the U.K after this, then November 17th we go home for a while.
When are we going to get new music?
We're gonna spend the winter in New Orleans writing new songs and then record them in California in the spring. We are very excited. We already have little ideas and a couple of new songs, it's gonna be different than the last EP. But I guess all bands say that.
Thanks
Yonatan
