The dark, small, lounge bar at Angels and Kings NYC was nicely suited and seated for a 2 hour acoustic show featuring Exit She Calls, For the Foxes, and Beyond Hope Lies.
Around 8:15pm Bergen County, New Jersey's Exit She Calls played a lush set filled with songs singer Kristia Moya wrote before her band, like "Lips of Loveliness" and "I am." Last week they had rocked Newark's KilKenny Alehouse, even throwing in a New Found Glory cover. So, it was nice to hear a lot of the electric songs raw this evening. While they didn't play a cover this time, it was still a nice vibe. They reminded me of Lemuria and Tokyo Rose- nice groove, melodic, and sweet lyrics. The band's playing another acoustic show at the Hot Topic in Elizabeth, NJ on May 22.
Next was For the Foxes, who performed a fun, rock keyboard laden set. It was great to see a pop/rock band with a keyboard from Jersey. They also had a tambourine. They dedicated their last song to everyone that loves pizza, the song was about pizza. Classic. Later I ventured down Ave A to find the $1 pizza place the band had talked about, tasty. They had energy that made me smile and move in my sit.
Closing the night was Beyond Hope Lies. This set was a disappointment, to say the least. The vocals were off, the screams seemed unnecessary and were annoying, and the music and lyrics weren't compelling. My ears hurt. Their myspace songs aren't that bad, but something was off with this band live and acoustic.
If you're looking for a nice night out, Angels and Kings has acoustic shows every Friday night. It's always free admission, 21+.
