Album Review: Sirs bring dynamic rock sound on Black Friday Sessions

Sirs, The Black Friday Sessions
Northern New Jersey
Something-Artsy Records

For fans of: Violent Femmes, Jeff Buckley, and Talking Heads

New Jersey is alive and thriving with great music and one band simply brings the rock. Sirs is a dynamic rock band from northern New Jersey. Not to be mistaken for the punk band “The Sirs.” Michael Aquino, a professional actor, serves as the band's singer and guitarist. Drummer Jason Clark has been performing and teaching in NJ for over 10 years and David Hilton is a proficient musician of 13 musical instruments.Overall, there's hint of '90s alternative-pop, indie rock, soul, and folk in the band's music. Together Black Friday Sessions is a wonderful, years in the making, album by three college friends.

So what do you get? 10 great songs by 3 guys and few guest musicians. The Black Friday Sessions is a simply good rock album. These seasoned musicians know how to deliver no frills rock that is focused and flavored. What's neat is that Aquino and Hilton switch off on vocals. Aquino sings on the odd tracks, while Hilton sings on the even ones. “No Exit” is jammy one with a whistling part that makes me shake around. It's based on Jean-Paul Sartre's No Exit. On “Just Make Me Perfect” Hilton sings of “I wish I was smarter. I wish I was wiser. I wish that I can be everything that you wish that I could be.” Don't we all feel that way at one point?  Then there's a  sweet, cool, funky, rap song about a guy trying to find love in the “Grocery Store.” Hilton sings “Shoppin' on down that produce aisle I look for that tasty peach...” Then there's the lighter song “You See! (Far Ahead...)” complete with violin. The album closes with “Jersey Shore,” but starts with the line “sitting on the beach with my guitar, thinking of lovers...” Isn't that how we should all feel at the Jersey shore? I think so. Sirs, rock!

Sirs is: Michael Aquino (vocals, guitar, percussion, hand claps), Jason Clark (drums, percussion, bells, sax), and David S. Hilton (vocals, bass, cello, violin, guitar, trumpet, percussion, bells).

Black Friday Sessions is available at CD Baby, DigStation, and iTunes.
