What's the best measure of a local band's success?

It's hard to say what the best measure is, but I'll offer some thoughts.

I assume this is a band member asking. I think that one way to evaluate success is based on the goals set by the band. If the goals are met, then there's success.

It also depends on your outlook of the band. Do you see the band as a business? If so then, it's a numbers game and success is fairly easy to determine. You want to make money, right? How many records did your band press? Did they sell out? How long did it take? How are other bands like yours doing? Did you play a local gig? How many people showed up?

If that doesn't really matter, then that's fine. We can look at success in term's of something a little more harder for someone else to determine, but maybe something you can feel. How's the response when you play? Do you feel amazing after your played a local gig? Are your fans interested in talking to you? Do you feel connected to your fans? I think that's a determinant for success. Local press or blogs writing about the band might be an indication of success. I also think sustainability is key. If your band lasts for a few years that's something to be proud of. It's tough dealing with different personalities among band members, trying to tour, and recording music, all while trying to gain attention in a music world that is saturated with bands and may leave you wanting out.
