For fans of: Folk, Rock, The Hold Steady, Tom Waits

Franz Nicolay is a man of the music. He's a multi-instrumentalist, whose involved himself in understanding the craft of the music and all aspects of production throughout his career with World/Inferno Friendship Society and the Hold Steady and currently  Guignol and his solo career plus music with Major General. He works to make music that's interesting with his brand of folk that encompasses stories of his life, heard through piano, accordion, and harmonica, just to name a few. On Mr. Nicolay's latest release, a 10-inch 4-song EP, he's exploring the emotional depths of his music, really taking it to lighter heights but kicking it off with a feel good cover song.

St. Sebastian of the Short Stage is a somewhat somber EP of life, war, and love. It starts off with “New England,” a Jonathan Richman cover featuring Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls  providing a feel good song about the area in the northeast. It makes you want to clap your hand sand sing along. There are plenty of “dum-de-dum's” and “doddly-doodly-do's” to get you singing and dancing around. The following songs are lighter in nature. The “Ballad of Hollis Wadsworth Mason, Jr.” highlights Nicolay's accordion-ship, as in keen musicianship with the accordion. Did I just make that one up? The final 5-minute long song, "I Just Want to Love" is a sweet, acoustic one that's tear-jerking worthy. “I'm sick of giving and getting nothing back. I just want to love, is that not enough? I have a big heart, true love,” he sings. Certainly Nicolay is not afraid to reveal his emotions and that's what I love, plus he's talented!

The 10-inch is available on Team Science here. Each EP includes a free mp3 download for the songs, a pullout poster insert and an exclusive new short story by Nicolay entitled "Paraska Mikhailivna Is A Witch."
