Live Review: Black Gold / Sherwood / Reece / Morning @ School of Rock, South Hackensack, NJ

Black Gold @ School of Rock 3-16-10

Photos and story by Rozlyn Smith

I had the pleasure of seeing Black Gold perform at the School of Rock in South Hackensack, NJ. on March 10th. When Black Gold took the stage, my mouth started to water over Erick Ronick's (ex-Panic! At the Disco keyboardist) keyboard-it is gorgeous! With the amount of dancing that went on, it surely seemed that the crowd responded very well to their set list, which included “Detroit,” “Shine,” and “The Come Down.” I must say Eric Ronick is an amazing vocalist and keyboardist and Than Luu really knows how to play the drums. I could not believe how much heart and soul this band put into their performance.

Though their bassist had some technical difficulties the band managed to push through the challenge at hand and put on an amazing show. The talent this duo has left me speechless. What I listened to on their MySpace page, and what I heard live blew me out of the water (and that's a good thing). I even picked up a copy of their CD Rush and I can't stop listening to it. This duo is one to watch out for. With their energy and talent there is nothing they can't do or achieve!

Lift the Decade

Before Black Gold even took the stage two other talented bands took the audience's ears by storm. The first band Lift The Decade, who reminded me of a mix of Alesana meets Boys Like Girls, had the crowd's heads bobbing and feet tapping. What really got me hooked was their fill in bass player. His energy and bass skills were amazing. Also, their cover of “Baby Blue” by The Early November was almost as good as the original. I was truly impressed by this band and I'm certain I will be hearing great things about them in the future.

Reece

After Lift the Decade left the stage, Justin Reece jumped right on the stage and was ready to play. He interacted with the crowd constantly and was a genuinely nice guy.  He even hung around for the whole show at his merchandise table and talked with those in attendance! The crowd certainly enjoyed his set which included "Lucky,” “Melody,” and “What's Inside.”

 Morning...

After Black Gold, but before Sherwood, Morning... (a band who is familiar with the School of Rock) played a great set. The audience participated with this band quite a bit. Some fans called for their drummer, George Serr, to take his shirt off and others begged lead singer and guitarist Darryl Norrell to take his hat off. The band also released their second demo and their first t-shirt that night. Though their set was cut short, they still brought everything they had to the table and then some, which enticed the audience to call for an encore, but due to set time restrictions the encore could not be fulfilled.

Sherwood

Finally headliner Sherwood took the stage. Those who stuck around to see the California natives perform were not disappointed. Some of the songs in the set list included “Song In My Head,” "Learn to Sing,” “Not Gonna Love,” and my favorite song by them, “Middle of the Night.” Sherwood even brought a fan on stage to sing and dance around. It looked like it was fun. The band surprised the audience when they brought Justin Reece on stage and did a cover of Miley Cyrus' “Party in the USA,” for the band's final song. After their set, the band quickly jumped on the floor to meet and greet their devoted fans. This band seems to love their fans because their CD's were any price you wanted to pay.

All in all, I'd say the night was a great success. Everyone seemed to have a good time and isn't that what counts at concerts? I'm looking forward to hearing more from all the bands in the future.
