Four New Jersey bands played NYC's Bowery Poetry Club two Saturday evenings ago. The Defending Champions champ Matt Ryan put together a delightfully fun night at the poetry club turned rock venue ,where two years ago I was seeing The Beets, Nanunchka, Emilyn Brodsky, and various punk bands. This time it was all about rockin' n rollin'. From country tinged folk rock to jam rock to reggae rock and more, the band's brought somewhat different sounds, but managed to keep my attention the entire show. The evening started with Any Day Parade, a sharp sounding folk/ country / blues rock band. They had some slower, somewhat country/Americana songs and some jammier ones as well. Personally, I've never been a fan of country but the way this band does it is nice. I was also pleased to see they had a 7'' inch record.
Old Wives, who we spoke about before, brought all the energy they had for this night. They even played, if I'm not mistaken, Tom Petty and Talking Heads covers plus their rockin' jams, including "Rip Van Winkle." It's great seeing Jason Gleason jam out and feel the music. It was also nice hearing Bella sing. The Defending Champions also from Verona, NJ played a fantastic reggae/ rock set. This is when the crowd started dancing. The vocals shifted between Matt and Jenny and most of the time they sang together. "One Time" was fun. The guitarist had that repetitive ska rock sound that was coupled with great horn playing. It was nice seeing drummer Shawn also playing in this band.
Bern and the Bights played last because they were coming from another show at The Cup in Linden, NJ. This band never ceases to amaze me with how often they play shows. The quality of their live show keeps getting better and better. They had the crowd dancing and groovin'. One person was even break-dancing during a song. The musicianship across all of these bands was great.
