Live Review: Gold Motel @ Maxwells in Hoboken 5-6-10 w/ Family of the Year

The theme for the night must have been “energy,” because that is what the bands I saw at Maxwell's for the night gave. The first band up was Family of the Year, who had plenty of pep and kept me entertained. It was a great start for what would be a fun night. Next up was Gold Motel, a Chicago based band fronted by Greta Morgan of The Hush Sound. This show was the last of three dates in the NY/NJ area for them, but you wouldn't be able to tell based on the energetic show they gave their audience. They opened with "Summer House," a fun, clap-inducing number that even had me drop my camera long enough to clap along. Right off the bat they proved to be energetic and dancy. They played a bunch of songs off their new album, which sounds like it is worth a listen if this sample was any indication. They even broke out a tambourine for one or two numbers. Between that and the drummers intense beats, I got tired just watching them. They really put a lot of energy into their performance. They slowed it down a bit about midway through their set, as if they were taking a breath before diving back into the water. Their lively performance would build back up though, and a couple of songs later we would be back to dancing our hearts out. If you have never heard of this band before I suggest you fix that as soon as possible. They are a fun mix of dance and energy that will make you smile when you need it most. They ended with "Perfect In My Mind," and that is how I would describe the night.
