Album Review: Sleepies release gnarly punk rock album

Sleepies- Sleepies
Brooklyn, NY
Self Released
Released: May 29, 2010

Despite their name, Sleepies do anything but put you to sleep. With driving, roolicking, and honest punk rock songs about drinking, religion, stereotypes, squirrels, and more, Sleepies incite the kind of bass heavy punk rock that's almost hardcore tinged, making it easy music to two-step to.

Forget about following trends, Sleepies do what they want and they don't seem to care who listens.

"Hypochondriac Blues" is a fast, punk rock driven number that almost ad nauseam has singer Thomas singing "Operation," with a trumpet blarring sharply behind. I could imagine the band and fans having fun during this one. "Backbone" is another fun track, as is"Huh," but that's just three of the 13 songs on this release.

The shout scream style gets your attention. Besides the first and last song no songs are longer than three minutes, in true punk rock form. Somewhat sloppy with edgy hardcore tendencies and a slew of repeated lines, Sleepies get risky. This is the kind of band that play in DIY spaces, for good reason. They have control over their shows and in Brooklyn, there's so many house and loft spaces to play. I gotta embrace a band that does their own thing.

Also, if you're wondering about the album art. It's based on Carl Sagan's pioneer plaque. If you're intrigued, some information is available here. Plus the band silk-screened all 200 copies of the LP by hand. Get yours while they're around.

The album can be purchased at the band's shows, through paypal, or at Academy Records in Brooklyn. It's available on black vinyl for $10.
