Sentient Machine- Self Titled
Location: NJ/NYC
Holy shit. I didn't know there were hardrock bands that were making you dance these days. I also didn't know there were industrial bands rockin' too. NJ's Methodical and End of an Era provide industrial elements, but now there's Sentient Machine.
When I first heard "James Brown New Year's Eve Bash" all I could think was "fuck." Now I'm not one to curse, but the spiraling groove in this jam was refreshing to hear. Slightly industrial, slightly funky and all rock, an in-your-face song about partying with sweet guitar licks and bass.
But other songs seem overly sexual. "Objects Are Women" creeps me out. "She's my object"-really? The music is cool but the sexualized lyrics get disgusting like on tracks like "Hard Enough" and "She Blew Me Up." Can you tell what's that referring to? This is shameful. I was greeted with a great jam only to end up being turned off by the lyrics for the rest of the songs on this debut. I can take the party song, but not the rest. Can there be a good hardrock band that doesn't sing about sex, drugs, and money? C'mon. Listen here for yourself: http://sentientmachine.bandcamp.com/

Hmm, I guess the alternative to sex, drugs, and money is feelings/love/emo-ness? I'm ready for new lyrical topics too. Nice review!
ReplyDeleteThere's also satire of all of those topics. I feel like there's lot of that in the music, but it seems like it was lost in the review.
