New York City oozes with a mecca of rock 'n roll goodness. SoHo's historic rock venue Don Hills is a prime spot for hosting the city's local bands and most recently during Fashion Week, much acclaimed acts, Hole and Iggy Pop. You never know who will walk into Don Hills and that's exactly the surprise we got at Rich Russo's 2nd Year Anniversary 'Anything, Anything' radio program show. The WRXP DJ put together a simply kick ass night of rock 'n' roll with some special guests, some likely not even planned. But that's the beautify of NYC and rock. It breeds attraction. The night featured New Jersey's Dramarama, New York's The Dirty Pearls, San Antonio's Girl in a Coma, and Max is King, performing as an acoustic duo.
Enter Don Hills. Like any good rock venue the walls were plastered with artwork and photography. Some were sexually explicit and phallic, some were typical portrayals of rockers with mohawks, guitars, and more. This was my first time back since at least 2006. It was cool being in what felt like a true rock atmosphere.
Max is King performed as an acoustic duo. The vocals were wailing. Man knows how to hold a note and show so much passion in his performance. Girl in a Coma performed a nice girl group punk rock set with a punch that included a cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth." The Dirty Pearls rocked with their riffy yet melodic songs and leg kicks. Finally, Dramarama. They rocked the house and put some energy on their classic and namesake of Rich's show with "Anything Anything." The encore included a cover of I Want to Rock 'n Roll All Night by Kiss with the Dirty Pearls, and "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll" by The Rolling Stones featuring Girl in a Coma. Also, Bono, Lady Gaga (rumored), and Joan Jett were there. Gaga's boyfriend Luc Carl is a fan and friend of The Dirty Pearls and Girl in a Coma is on Joan Jett's label. Not sure how Bono ended up there, but it's pretty rad. Rich Russo did a fine job hosting. I must give it up to the DJ with the only free form radio show in New York City. Listen at 101.9 WRXP every Sunday from 9-11pm or 1019rxp.com. Learn about the program here: http://www.1019rxp.com/anythinganything/
Few corrections, Lady Gaga wasn't there (I believe she was in Belgium at the time)and Luc Carl ISN'T in the Dirty Pearls. He is a friend of the band.
