Feminist arts activist group Permanent Wave is hosting a benefit for imprisoned Russian punk band "Pussy Riot" this Tuesday, June 12th. The benefit will take place at Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd Street, Brooklyn, NY. The show will feature performances from Heliotropes, Shady Hawkins, TinVulva, and a DJ set from Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz of The Beastie Boys. Admission is $7.
Here are the details on Pussy Riot from freepussyriot.org
“Three alleged members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot, Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Ekaterina Samucevich, charged with ‘hooliganism’, have been remanded in jail, facing up to 7 years criminal punishment for allegedly participating in the punk-prayer Virgin Mary, Send Putin Away that publicly demonstrated for human rights and against the current oppressive regime under Putin. The case illustrates the gross level of violations against human rights in Russia and requires immediate attention. The detained activists now need the support of the world's community.” According to the latest reports, the trial will take place between June 18th and 24th. The benefit show will support their legal expenses. Both Alice Bag and Kathleen Hanna have reached out in support of both Pussy Riot and this show.
Appropriately, in the spirit of punk and DIY, the "event marks a collaboration of New York area artists and musicians to support an international human rights issue. The show, located in a DIY space and featuring a diverse group of performers including strong representation of Women of Color, is all-ages and offers donation-based admission on a sliding scale."
