Facebook charging to promote page posts

The evils of money-grubbing companies are underway over at Facebook. Bands and record labels are not reaching all the fans they have acquired. Facebook is making it so that only a small percentage (about 1/4) of those who have "liked' your page get to see what you post. So if you have 200 likes, the odds it will only appear on about 50 people walls.
"Promoted posts are a simple way to reach more of the people who like your Page and their friends," Facebook says.
Funny. They're telling me that I need to pay money to reach the people who already like my page. It is a form of advetising but you're paying to reach the fans you already have. It seems funny and unfair to me. I run a label and should be able to reach the number of fans I have. Facebook can be a huge marketing tool for bands and labels and this recent development is making it hard for my label and my bands to update their fans of what's going on. We can seek alternatives or use a combination of efforts for sure (Twitter, mailing lists, etc). We have to rely on folks going to our page freely instead of the convience of the information being available in my page on their walls. It's a shame that I have to pay to communicate to people who are freely following my page. What do you think about this? To me it's a constant reminder that nothing is really free even if it appears that way.

UPDATE:

To clarity this matter better local band hero said, "Facebook is not doing anything to take away from what people see...they're simply giving you the ability to have it seen by more people."

Also, according to this article this isn't necessarily a recent development.
