Album Review: Screaming Females evolve on Singles

Screaming Females, Singles (2010)
New Brunswick, NJ
Don Giovanni Records

Screaming Females' Singles collection is a 6-song EP comprised of songs from their 7-inch releases released over the past 3 years. The songs showcase the band's slower, jammy, sometimes bluesy, always groovy rock 'n roll sound. It also includes the band's cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer." The songs are ordered from oldest to most recent, so you can the evolution of a band playing jammy songs to more rockin' ones. "No Being Disgusting" is the first appearance where Paternoster screams. This song is where Screaming Females shine, with a good dancey groove, screams, and guitar shredding. The catchy "Pretty Ok" also highlights a similar sound with a catchy hook that is kept in order by Dougherty's drumming and the fine bass lines of Mike. Lastly, it's"I Do" originally from the Jeff: the Brotherhood split. Do I dig this album? You bet I do.
