Grace Potter and the Nocturnals deliver a soulful, bluesy, rock 'n roll album with their latest self-titled release. It's simply delicious. The album maintains a consistent feel good vibe. "Paris (Ooh La La)" is a sexy, catchy, dancey number; while "Only Love" recalls the popular phrase: "What don't kill you, makes you stronger," adding in "It's only my soul/ It's only my heart/and it's only love." "Tiny Lights" is a powerful song that shows off Potter's beautiful and dynamic vocals. Potter's voice reminds me of Janis Joplin, Sheryl Crow, and Genevieve Schatz (of Company of Thieves). Soothing, soulful, and strong Potter knows how to belt out of a good song. Each of these 13 songs shine. It's rare coming across an album with these many gems.
There's also blues and '60s and '70s hints in the music that makes the album a real good listen. The band knows their roots, but also how to craft it into their own rockin' style. Somehow they manage to have all these influences, yet the music doesn't sound misplaced. The Vermont band is great. This album will go places. Where? NYC for a performance this Saturday with with San Antonio's Hacienda.
