Bands You Should See at CMJ 2010

Yeah, I'm jumping on the bandwagon and have my own list of band's you should see at the CMJ Music Marathon this week. But unlike other lists mine is in no particular order (notice it's alphabetized).

Bad Books- Featuring Kevin Devine and Andy Hull, two of my favorite songwriters, it's a match made! You can stream the band's new album here: http://www.myspace.com/badbooksmusic They perform at Bowery Ballroom on Oct. 20 at 8:30pm.

Black Taxi- Danceable rock'n roll. Just check out their video for "Up Here For Thinking, Down There for Dancing" here: http://www.myspace.com/blacktaximusic Hot, right? They perform Oct. 20 at Arlene's Grocey 3:30pm, Oct. 21 at Rockwood Music Hall stage 2 (10pm), and Oct. 23 at The Studio of Webster Hall (11pm).

Bodega Girls- If you want to dance and have a good time, watch Bodega Girls. They will make you sweat, they will get in your face, and dance with you. Sensual, hot, fun. Bodega Girls got soul. Indie. Electro. Rock. They perform at Arlene's Grocery on Oct. 22 (5pm). I saw them twice at last year's CMJ and they were one of the best acts! Check out "ain't that cold" here: http://www.myspace.com/bodegagirls

Cassette Kids- Recently discovered this Aussie band. Another great fun dance band. Indie electro pop rock! Check our review and photos of their first NYC show here. They perform Oct. 20 at Sneak Attack Media's showcase at The Delancey (3:45pm) with Jukebox the Ghost and also Oct. 21 (7pm). Listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/cassettekids

Fake Problems- Folk punk from Florida. Playing 8 CMJ showcases. That's impressive. Playing all sorts of showcases. Just go here for all the details: http://www.myspace.com/fakeproblems

Hank and Cupcakes- Good pop music you can dance to. Bass and drums, that's all. That's all they need. Sexy music. They cover Joy Division. Tunes, video, and showcases here: http://www.myspace.com/hankandcupcakes

Miniboone- 5-piece indie/pop from Brooklyn. This band is nuts live. 3 musicians play both keyboard and guitar plus sing. Check out the band's new single and an interview here. They are playing 6 CMJ Music Marathon showcases. http://www.myspace.com/minibooneband

Naam: My nod for heavier music goes to Naam. Playing Oct. 20 at Mercury Lounge (7pm) and Union Pool (late). Doomy. http://www.myspace.com/naamdestroysfaces

Neutral Uke Hotel- Neutral Milk Hotel cover songs played on ukulele. Awesome. Performing Oct. 22 at Cameo (9pm). Listen here: http://www.myspace.com/neutralukehotel

River City Extension- Orchestral folk rock from Jersey. They recall The Avett Brothers, Murder by Death, and Man Man. Playing Oct. 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Kevin Devine. http://www.myspace.com/rivercityextension

Screaming Females- Rock 'n roll punk band from New Brunswick. Groovy greatness.  Performing Oct. 19 at Brooklyn Bowl with Yo La Tengo (8pm, free), Oct. 21 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (7pm) with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Oct. 23 at Maxwell's (8pm) with Corin Tucker Band. http://www.myspace.com/screamingfemales

Waking Lights- Folk rock with a violinist. Sweet. Check out the song "Only the sex." Performing Oct. 19 at The delancey, Oct. 21 at Spike Hill, Oct. 22 at Bruar falls (day), and Rockwood Music Hall (night). http://www.myspace.com/wakinglights

Interview with The So So Glos

DOWNLOAD: The So So Glos- Fred Astaire

Still from "Fred Astaire" video shoot

The So So Glos is a rock band from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Think The Stooges, The Ramones, Titus Andronicus. Think garage-rock with some parts rock, some parts roll--that means you can dance to it. They know how to keep a beat and keep you interested. Singer Alex has that charming, yet urgent and punk  singing voice that works nicely with the band's music.

Currently they've released a new EP, are putting out a video for first single "Fred Astaire," and touring frequently in New York, and soon after playing a pair of shows with a delightful Brooklyn duo. We spoke with singer Alex Levine, while on the road, about the band's new EP, Low Back Chain Shift, their upcoming 5 boroughs tour, the importance of all ages spaces, and more.

Where are you now?

Alex Levine: We are in Austin, Texas on our way to New Orleans. Just finished the final dates with the Futureheads last night [Oct. 12]. Great tour. Now we're touring on our own back to New York.

What is the meaning behind the title for your new EP, Low Back Chain Shift?

AL: It's actually a way to describe the New York Drawl, like that comes out in talk and coffee. It's an accent on a dialectic. That's pretty much the technical term for the New York Drawl. We like the ring to it and the rhythmic nature of it and that's kind of an element of our music as well. In some ways it ensues a change of some sort. New York is an ever changing place, as is the world.

Are you playing a lot of these songs live?

AL: Oh yeah. We're pretty much playing every song on the [5-song] EP live. It's great to keep things fresh and get new things out there.

River City Extension to play CMJ w/ Kevin Devine, Voodoo Music Festival

River City Extension is an indie-folk rock band from Toms River, NJ. Their brand of music is touching, honest, and heartfelt. They are a band with a sense of musical craft. Their sound is best described as orchestral with elements of punk, country, folk, and world music. Their songs are filled with piano, cello, trumpet, and djembe (a type of hand drum), plus vocals from 4 members. Their sound is charming, sensual, energetic. In this regard the band standout. Their music is so full and driving. It's not boring and this band is a sure keeper.

Their latest release The Unmistakable Man takes you on a musical journey that will carry you to another world. Fans of such acts like The Avett Brothers, Mumford and Son, Murder by Death, Man Man, and Spoon will find River City Extension similarly good. If someone outside New Jersey tells me what bands from the area they should check out, one of the first I'd list is River City Exntesion.

They performs at the CMJ Music Marathon with Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band, Miniature Tigers, Death on Two Wheels, and Oh Land at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Oct. 19th. More info here. They'll also play Voodoo Music Festival on Oct. 30 on the main stage with Ozzy Osbourne and Cage the Elephant.
