Don Giovanni Records Showcase 2011

Jersey label Don Giovanni Records will present their 4th annual showcase on Feb. 11 at a TBA venue featuring headliner Lemuria and Feb. 12 at Music Hall of Williamsburg featuring headliner Screaming Females (tickets on sale Friday at noon). Screaming Females have already opened for Throwing Muses, Dinosaur Jr, Jay Reatard, and most recently the Pains of Being Pure at Heart at Music Hall, so it's nice that they're headlining almost two years since the Muses gig. With two new signings, Big Eyes and Laura Stevenson & the Cans, it was no surprise they'd appear on the shows. All these bands have news and recent releases, so here is the low down.

Day 1: The Steinways is releasing a singles collection LP on the label and with Alive Records. The Measure (SA) have released a new album on No Idea Records called "Notes." Black Wine is releasing a 3-song 7'' called Dark Energy. Full of Fancy released their new collection called Liquid Nature+Singles. And finally, Big Eyes have a 7'' demo out on Evil Weevil and are releasing a 7'' single soon with plans to record a full LP in May.

Day 2: Screaming Females released a Singles EP and Castle Talk LP. Laura Stevenson and the Cans is in the studio working on a new album. Lemuria is releasing a new album called Pebble on Jan. 11 through Bridge Nine Records. Shellshag released a new album called Rumours...And Byrds of Paradise is releasing a new album called Teenage Symphonies on Jan. 11.

Full of Fancy's new album Liquid Nature has 22 songs. 11 new songs, 11 singles from previous releases. Together it's a new and old take on Full of Fancy in one shot. The songs range from poppy to punk to sad to groovy. 

The new songs have a summertime vibe of being away from dear ones, wanting love and good weather, and feeling emotional."Basement" is a great representation of the band's sound. Bouncy and bursting with pop-punk flavor.

"Weather" is a somber song that reminds me of the now defunct New York band One True Thing. Here the band tones it down to sing "Tell me that I worry for nothing." After is a song that reminds me of Screaming Females. Heavy. Groovy. Instrumenal. This is the title track "Liquid Nature"-- a killer track. Certaintly unexpected from this band. "Dear Summer" is about anticipating summer. The album concludes with a cute song called "Dumb Is Forever," about being shy when you're in love.

The second part of the album features the quick "Soule Cake," "Gym Class," "Notebook," and "Whoa Theodore Whoa." This album is filled with wonderful songs.

Full of Fancy album out June 23, release show in Kearny, NJ

Full of Fancy has a new album called Liquid Nature. It's out on June 23. The band's past two releases have been catchy as hell. Poppy, punky. Yeah, that's how we like it. You can pre-order it here or at the band's record release show in Kearny, NJ on the same day. This is exciting because I used to live in Kearny when I was younger and haven't had a chance to get over to The Irish. Also, FOF tend to play in New Brunswick and Asbury Lanes, not that close to Newark, so for me this really is a local show.

Let's break this show down. Tenement and Chinese Telephones are on tour together from Wisconsin. They play punk! Big Eyes features former Cheeky singer Kate Eldridge on guitar, plus Seasick's Mark Bronzino on bass. Together with drummer C.J. Frederick, who I'm unfamiliar with, make a cool, rock 'n roll punk band.

Night Birds is a punk band with hints of hardcore made up of members from For Science, The Ergs, and Hunchback. Then, it's Full of Fancy! Whoa! Should be rad. Locals Screaming Females, Black Wine, Ben Franklin, Titus Andronicus, and Ted Leo have played this place already. I bet those shows were wild and great, I bet this one will be, too.

Don Giovanni Records Presents two shows April 24 & 25 w/ Special Guest & Shellshag

After a successfully fun sold out show with a stacked line-up of 7 bands for Don Giovanni Records annual showcase, which happened at Bowery Ballroom in February, the label have announced they are presenting two spring shows at Mercury Lounge NYC. April 24 features The Measure (SA), Byrds of Paradise (who will release a 7'' on the label), Modern Hut (the label's own Joe's band), and a special guest headliner. April 25 Shellshag headlines with Noun (Marisa Paternoster of Screaming Females solo project), Full of Fancy, Black Wine, and Pregnant. The show is $10 in advance. Get ready for another night of punk, rock, n roll goodness. Details below.

Benefit show f/ Lemuria, Full of Fancy, Static Radio NJ, and others in Trenton on March 7

A benefit show is being held at Championship Bar in Trenton, NJ on Sunday, March 7. The show will help raise money for Shanye Miel, the singer of The Future Kings of Nowhere from Durham, North Carolina. He has stage four B cell  Lymphoma, a form of cancer and no health coverage.

Bands performing include: The Tea & Whiskey, Lemuria, Static Radio NJ, Full of Fancy, Post No Bills, The Sirs, Radio Exiles, Curious Buddies, and The Timid Roosevelts. Donation is $10. Championship is located at 931 Chambers St, Trenton, NJ. Doors at 2pm.

Full of Fancy signs to Don Giovanni Records + Upcoming Shows

Don Giovanni Records have signed New Jersey's own Full of Fancy. The catchy, pop-punk 4-piece start recording for their next album, Liquid Nature next month and plan to release the album in the spring. Their last full length, Sweet Baby Jesus was released in 2007 and since have released a bunch of 7-inch splits, and the Every Wall in the Parlor EP in February 2009, which features the sweet song "Soule Cake."

Black Wine sign to Don Giovanni Records

Don Giovanni Records have signed New Jersey trio Black Wine. The band features ex-Ergs member Jeff Schroeck on guitar, Miranda Taylor of Full of Fancy on drums and vocals, and ex-Hunchback drummer J. Nixon on bass and vocals. The band will be recording their debut album in the fall with a release by the end of the year.

"Combined the trio play a a mix of alternative and punk reminiscent of the early days of SST and Sub Pop," the label said.

The band has an upcoming show at Mercury Lounge NYC with Screaming Females on Sept. 1st and at the Alligator Lounge in Greenpoint, Brooklyn on Sept. 25th.

Also, Full of Fancy will be playing the Big She-Bang at Judson Memorial Church on Aug. 15th. The band returns to New Brunswick for a show at Death Valley on Aug. 21st with Dead Mechanical, Break Events, and Night Birds featuring ex-members of Ergs, Hunchback, and For Science. Miranda plays guitar for Full of Fancy, but rocks out on the drums in Black Wine.

Lemuria "Pants" @ America, New Brunswick 6/23/09


Lemuria returned from the U.K. with a show at the America house in Hub City. This was the third house show I’ve been to. Meat Town USA and Death City usually carry the show in town, so it was exciting to go to somewhere new. By the time opener, Jeff Erg went on around 7pm, the room was packed with people. I managed to squeeze up front. He played a few sweet acoustic songs. Full of Fancy was up next with a fun, punk set. You Without Teeth, a duo from New Brunswick played an interesting set of songs that sounded like a mix of screamo and punk. Valens were the heaviest band of the night, playing a brutal hardcore set. Changing the pace was Cheap Girls from Lansing, MI. They had the crowd moving and dancing around. They sounded like some 90s rock band I can't put my tongue on. I thoroughly enjoyed the set. It was nice, sweet pop rock.

Finally, around 10:15pm Lemuria made their way on the floor. They played at Maxwell's in Hoboken on June 7. It looked like the band wouldn't be coming around again, but with the help of some friends this show was organized. That's what great about these kind of shows. There's a lot of community involved. The shows may be a little hush hush, but it's exclusive. It's word of mouth and a bit of promotion. Despite this show being announced just a few days before, the room was filled with eager kids who wanted music. Lemuria played a fast set squeezing in "Hour," "Pants," "Dog," "Get Some Sleep," and "Mechanical," "Lipstick" and even a new song. It was a great set and it was cool seeing everyone having fun.
