Maria Taylor @ Maxwell's in Hoboken TONIGHT, played the Bell House (Brooklyn)
Maria Taylor and the Whispertown 2000 performed on Easter at Brooklyn's The Bell House, a 350+ capacity room with stools, a sofa, dim lighting and chandelier. In honor of the holiday, Maria gave away Easter eggs which contained chocolate and a slip saying either "Happy Easter! Thank you for coming to the show. Love, Maria" or contained a prize. The first band up was Brooklyn's Hawk and Dove. They had a nice vibe, but were a bit boring at times and sounded out of tune. It was nice to hear a violist to. They had free demos available to. Next, was the Whispertown 2000 from California. They had a blues/folk rock feel. It was cool to see three of the members switching off on instruments, especially the drums. For the last song, Maria Taylor played drums. She could be seen in the audience since the last song of Hawk and Dove.
Maria Taylor went on at 10pm and started with the title track to her new album, Ladyluck, then went right into the old "Replay." It was great to hear the rockin' version of that one. The last time I saw her at Knitting Factory last summer, she played a lighter version of the song in the encore, but it didn't do the song justice. During "Good Start" members of the Whispertown 2000 were dancing around, it was a fun song with a nice groove. She played a lot of the new songs in the beginning, then played older songs. She closed with "Xanax" in the regular set, then the cheers brought the band back. She played "Song Beneath the Song," then by the crowds pleading, decided to play "Leap Year," which they hadn't practiced. it was the first encore of the tour, she said. More cheers brought on "Light house," then the band left and Maria decided to played "Two of the those two," and the lovely night was over.

Vivian Girls on Jeopardy??, playing NYC's Bowery Ballroom on May 11th
Vivian Girls "Tell the World" @South Street Seaport, NYC. 9/7/08

Vivian Girls will perform at New York's Bowery Ballroom with Times New Viking and Stupid Party on May 11th. Tickets are available here.
The band is all over the map touring. They're currently out with Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, then they'll be playing the Coachella Music Festival, followed by a tour with Abe Vigoda and then they are headed abroad.

After eating a nice fish dinner on Good Friday, I snuggled under my sheets for a nap. I was about 60 percent asleep, when I heard mom say, "Jeopardy's on." I rolled in my bed, "uh, I'll wake up for the final question." Moments later, she uttered the words, "Punk rock." I immediately knew that meant, "punk rock" was a category on the show. I jumped out of bed quickly and ran into her room. But I had been deceived. The category she was referring to was actually "arts and leisure." Then suddenly an answer came up. (Note: Apparently it was the category "New York Times" where the question appeared). I don't remember it exactly so I'll just say what it said as a question, if I had to paraphrase and put it simply:
What New York borough is Vivian Girls from?
The man answered, "what is the bronx?," all the while I kept saying, "BROOKLYN." No one else answered. I feel honored to have seen this band back in January at New Brunswick's Court Tavern with Screaming Females to a room of about 50. I didn't realize these 3 shoegazing punk rock girls were big enough to have a Jeopardy question, now that's cool. Mom was right, a punk rock question did appear. But I figured that none of the contestants would get the question. I believe Vivian Girls' audience is 20 something year olds. The contestants had to be in there 30's and 40's, so it's an interesting question. I think it was a $400 dollar question, which made is seem easy, but I think it'd be $1,000.
This reminded me of when a pokemon question appeared on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? a decade ago. The man had no clue and the question was for $500, 000. The question was:
Which of the following characters is not considered a Pokémon?
A: Jigglypuff
B: Frodo
C: Squirtle
D: Pikachu
Every kid in America was shouting, "Frodo," but the contestant had no clue. This was a bit alarming. I would've thought it'd be $32,000. It wasn't that hard considering Lord of the Rings is well known. We know Frodo is the hobbit, so that obviously has to be it, right?. Even if he didn't watch pokemon, I thought it'd be easy to spot Frodo. I hope there were other college kids that were shouting out, "BROOKLYN."

Montagna and the Mouth to Mouth to play Darfur Benefit TONIGHT in NYC, plus free mp3's
"Eight piece band Montagna and the Mouth to Mouth, from Asbury Park, NJ, will be in New York city on April 9th to take part in a benefit concert for the Darfur Rehabilitation project. The show will take place in a small capacity seated theatre at the Duplex, 61 Christopher St., New York, New York 10014. Performances will start early at 6:30 and be finished by 9:00. A $10.00 donation will be collected to benefit the Darfur Rehabilitation Project. The show will feature a set from Montagna and the Mouth to Mouth as well as Amy Marie Keller and Kenny Woods.
The Darfur Rehabilitation Project (DRP) was founded by a group of Darfurians living in the U.S., and deeply concerned about the human rights tragedy occurring in their homeland in western Sudan. DRP is working to unify the voices of Darfurians everywhere and bring increased international attention to bear on the situation there. Longer term, DRP will work to achieve conflict resolution and reconciliation among the ethnic groups in Darfur. DRP fosters the development of democratic institutions and respect for human rights. This event hopes to bring further exposure to Darfur and the on going struggle of it’s people. Overall press coverage of the Darfur genocide has been inadequate. There are still so many Americans that don't understand the urgency of the situation because it hasn't been covered extensively enough in the media. More information can be found at http://www.darfurrehab.org
Montagna and the Mouth to Mouth will be releasing an LP in June called L’avenir. There are MP3s and streaming content from the new release at http://www.myspace.com/themouthtomouth as well as 2 new MP3s at http://www.onceagreatsurgeon.org
The following night on April 10th Rachel Ade from Montagna and the Mouth to Mouth will be performing with her other project Out like lambs at Death By Audio in Brooklyn. On the same night Montagna will be playing a free show at O’tooles inside Asbury Park’s Convention hall."

OTEP signs to Victory Records, New Album "Smash the Control Machine" due August 18th
VICTORY RECORDS signs OTEP to recording, merchandising and publishing deal
"Smash The Control Machine" in stores August 18th, 2009
CHICAGO, IL – VICTORY RECORDS has signed Los Angeles recording artist OTEP. OTEP's all encompassing musical approach coupled with her shaman like artistic qualities and other creative musings have lead to over half a million albums sold over the course of three studio albums. Singer, songwriter, renegade Otep Shamaya describes the band's music as "...a total and complete mutiny on the senses. We are a fusion band by nature, inspired by many styles and tones from a variety of musical genres- rock, punk, metal, hip-hop, spoken word, jazz and classic rock. We never allow the antiquated limits of a genre confine or restrict us. Our music is universal and does not belong nor can it be contained in a nice, neat, little box."
The first release under the new alliance is OTEP's highly anticipated fourth full-length studio album "Smash the Control Machine". The new studio album will be released August 18, 2009. Ms. Shamaya says of the album, "The economic crisis is hitting every working family in this country. The album and its title track, "Smash The Control Machine", will lay bare the greed and corruption that fostered this calamity, but will also focus on the undying spirit of the working class that always fights the good fight. The title is a line from a William S. Burrough's poem. It is my intention to create an album that serves every head of the hydra that is OTEP. From poetry, to politics, to shock and awe, to sex and righteousness, to standing up and fighting back. Like the mystical symbol of the Ouroboros (the sacred serpent swallowing its tail) all things will be brought back to circle."
OTEP was originally signed after only four shows, without a demo, strictly on the power of the band's live performance. Sharon Osbourne offered the unsigned act a spot on the 2001 Ozzfest Tour leading to three appearances on the festival.
The band's leader, Otep Shamaya, is well respected for her lyrical content and dramatic live performances. She has also published two books of poetry, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, is a gifted painter and Revolver Magazine compared OTEP to Woodie Guthrie and Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine) for her fusing of political activism and music. Some of the primary groups that she supports are RAINN, Carbon Rally, PETA and WSPA. She is also an accomplished television personality having appeared on HBO's "Def Poetry" (twice), Bravo's "Date My Ex" and TLC's "L.A. Ink".
Otep had this to say about signing with VICTORY, "When I received the news of a possible OTEP/VICTORY alliance I could swear I felt the sky tremble. This triumvirate (of myself, my manager Jack Ponti and Victory Records) is going to be a terrifying coalition for some and a righteous confederation for others. For me, this is exactly the kind of circumstance I have been waiting for. I believe my creative, intellectual and political instincts and inclinations will flourish alongside the fertile minds of Jack Ponti, Tony Brummel and the amazing staff at Victory."
Victory Records Founder Tony Brummel said, "Signing an artist of OTEP's caliber, intelligence, work ethic and artistic diversity sensibly expands our diverse and formidable roster. I am personally enamored by her work and believe that she has yet to realize a fraction of her potential. More importantly, her art and music have crucial meaning in a time when people need change, hope and something to believe in. We have the tools, she has the material and together we will build a culturally formidable fortress."
Manager Jack Ponti had this to add, "It both thrills and honors me to be working with OTEP and Victory Records. In my thirty years in this business, it's always been about the proper "marriage". I cannot convey how excited I am about the possibilities of these daunting forces joining together in what promises to be a thunderous union."
In addition to lending her support to numerous groups and causes (some being the genocide in Darfur, Women's and artists' rights, Marriage Equality, the war in the Congo and support of President Obama), Ms. Shamaya, an accomplished, captivating and astute technophile, has started the social networks "All Shapes and Sizes", along with "Girls Out Now". On December 21, 2008 she created a popular and highly trafficked blog entitled, "I'm Not A Monster". The site was an instant success and a reliable source for current events and her latest musings. Her loyal and passionate fan base are active followers of her frequent Facebook and Twitter postings. Coupled with Victory's proprietary marketing and promotional platforms (VicTorV, VictorStream, VictoryMetal and VictorME) a truly interactive and real-time artist/fan/label fusion has been realized for selling music in 2009.
In closing Otep wanted to add the following quote from Sylvia Plath:
"I don't believe that the meek will inherit the earth: the meek get ignored and trampled. They decompose in the bloody soil of war, of business, of art, and they rot into the warm ground under the spring rains. It is the bold, the loud-mouthed, the cruel, the vital, the revolutionaries, the might in arms and will, who march over the soft patient flesh that lies beneath their cleated boots."

The band will also perform at 3:30pm at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ for Record Store Day on April 18th before playing at Music Hall of Williamsburg with Lucero.
Our masters at eXtra Large Recordings have decided that the audiotory elements of Titus Andronicus are not doing the job as far as moving units is concerned, and so we must enter the visual world in the form of a music video for our forthcoming UK single, "Upon Viewing Brueghel's 'Landscape and the Fall of Icarus.'"
Since the men of Titus Andronicus are all ugly bastards, we humbly request yr presence at Silent Barn on this coming Monday (this is where we are going to make the video), so that you, in all yr beauty, can dance and throw confetti and pretend that Titus Andronicus are actually playing music instead of just pretending. In this way, perhaps we can manipulate the record-buying public into allowing us to seperate them from their hard-earned money, the fools.
The prancing around will begin at around 4:30 PM and continue long into the evening. If any of you still have jobs for some reason, or some other obligation to see to, it will be perfectly fine in you want to come at a time after 4:30 PM. Nobody will think ill of you. We just desire yr presence in whatever way it may manifest itself.
We ask with the utmost humility that you come equipped with either a white or black t-shirt and pants.
No print on them please - a shirt turned inside out would be okay!
Also, please feel free to invite all yr friends so that we can create the illusion that everyone loves us.
This is all happening at Silent Barn, which can be reached by taking the L Train to Halsey, or by taking the M to Myrtle/Wyckoff. Here is Silent Barn on Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
Okay, that's all. Please come, or our self esteem will suffer irreperable damage.
Try having that on yr conscience!
