Junior Battles @ Knitting Factory 5-10-10

If Junior Battles is any indication of a good Toronto punk scene, then the four members in this band make me want to check out more music from the area. With an old-school New Found Glory tinged pop-punk flavored sound with vocals from all the members, Junior Battles provided a fun performance at their Monday night show at Brooklyn's Knitting Factory -- the band's first NYC show!
The band's energy for "Passing Out" was great - it was a driving song with nice harmonies and clean vocals. "The fever is breaking all of this day, as we sweat out our all our work weeks and remind ourselves we wanted it this way." They also played songs from their new self titled 7'' out on Square Up Records and available for free digitally on If You Make It.
One of the best, uplifting songs was "Basements" that goes "we get better, we get better everyday." The back and fourth vocals make these songs stand out. There are a few different parts going on in each of the songs that still flows very nicely. There are little guitar squeals here and there and shake about anthems that are catchy and in good pop punk measure, ones you can sing-along to. The album seems to talk about the trials of being a band. The band themselves jumped around and just made it a fun show without trying to hard.
Also performing was Thousandaires with their indie-punk sound, O Pioneers featuring members of Junior Battles with their folk-rock/punk flavor, and of course, Bomb the Music Industry headlining with their brand of sloppy ska and punk. The night proved to be a fun one and that was awesome to see. Nothing like a punk rock show on a Monday night.
