MEN (f/ Le Tigre's JD Samson) to release debut album Feb. 2011, music video

MEN is a queer political-dance pop band from Brooklyn comprised of Le Tigre's JD Samson, Michael O’Neill (Ladybug Transistor, Princess) and Ginger Brooks Takahashi (LTTR, The Ballet). Together they deliver an irresistible sound. They'll release their debut album, Talk About Body on IAMSOUND Feb. 1, 2011. This is music you let loose to. Music that makes you feel comfortable in your own skin. Kudos to MEN for discussing important issues and having a good beat at the same, too. Excited for this release.
Speaking to issues such as wartime economies, sexual compromise, and the demand for liberties, the band released their first EP, Limited Edition Demo to widespread acclaim, with the New York Times calling it “full of dreamy post-disco.”  They were lauded for their inventive, high energy live show, which saw them open tours for The Gossip and Peaches in America, in addition to doing their own headlining runs in the U.S. and overseas.  Combining politics with dance parties, art with activism, MEN shows have always reached a fever pitch, treating each show as an art project, sometimes asking local artists to paint a backdrop while they perform, or by using DIY cardboard-and-tippex props, including cut-out fists and banners printed with slogans like “SILENCE=DEATH” and “WHO AM I TO FEEL SO FREE”.
Tracklisting below.

Rubblebucket releasing new EP, announce Triangular Tour (NYC 11/5)

Rubblebucket, Brooklyn's 8-piece band, will release the Triangular Daisies EP on Oct. 19th. New York and Burlington fans will get to experience the band differently. They'll team up with Hack Interactive "to create an interactive, mulimedia stage design experience." They'll be in NYC on Nov. 5 with The Pimps of Joytime. Tickets are just $10. More info here

Since the band formed in 2007, pinning down their sound has remained a difficult task.  At times, the band sounds like Brooklyn’s answer to Fela Kuti, with frenetic afrobeat rhythms rubbing elbows with infectious indie-pop hooks and catchy synths.  Frontwoman/saxophonist Kalmia Travers explains, "We're children of this noisy age, with access to so much music from across time and space. We soak up all the sounds. What comes out can be unpredictable, but it will be uniquely ours."  Uniquely their own, indeed.

Corin Tucker releasing new album, playing Bowery & Maxwell's in October

DOWNLOAD: Corin Tucker: Doubt

Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney fame is releasing a new album this fall called 1,000 Years on October 5 through Kill Rock Stars. Shortly after the release she'll head on a small tour including dates on the east coast. Of note, is a show at Maxwell's in Hoboken on Oct. 23 and Bowery Ballroom In NYC on Oct. 26. Tickets for Maxwell's available here and for Bowery Ballroom here
...“1,000 Years” reveals the one-time Riot Grrrl as she is nearly 20 years after she began her career: as a full-grown Riot Woman. Old enough to trace the complexities of adult life, love and family, but still young enough to know better.

Cue the wrenching rhythms and hard-angle melodies, the slashing guitars and wildly passionate vocals. Only now the hard edges come nestled in lush weaves of acoustic guitars, keyboards, interlocking percussion, even cellos and violins.

“That’s the artistic, itchy personality,” Tucker says. “You’re constantly trying to do something different.”

Bad Books (Andy Hull + Kevin Devine)

DOWNLOAD: Bad Books – “You Wouldn’t Have To Ask”

Bad Books is the side project of Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull. The two emotionally passionate musicians have performed, toured, and collaborated together before, but this time they team up for a full album release and short tour. The self-titled album will be released on October 19th through Favorite Gentlemen Recordings. Grab a free download of the band's first single above and also stream a new song called "Please Move" here.

As songwriters go, Hull and Devine could not be further apart in terms of creative approach. The methodical wordsmith Devine, an English major from Fordham, is known to pine away for great lengths of time just to accurately pin-point one word within a lyric. “I was doing a take of ‘You’re A Mirror I Cannot Avoid’ and stopped myself for fifteen minutes because I was having trouble justifying ending two lines in the same chorus with the word ‘back.’ Just sitting there, staring at the screen, writing different word choices. I asked Andy if he thought it mattered, and he said, ‘Of course it doesn’t.’ Somewhere in that exchange is I think what differentiates us as songwriters. I think Andy trusts his instincts to lead him to the right place in a song, and sometimes I want to outthink my instincts because I’m scared of repeating myself, of resting on my laurels. And I think together, those two approaches meshed really, really well,” Devine said.

Hull echoes that sentiment: “Kevin is very meticulous, where I came in with a few ideas and fleshed them out literally as we were recording. Kevin’s songs were awesome and he was cool enough for me to throw in some ideas to change a part or add a bridge here or there.”

In contrast to previous outputs from Manchester Orchestra and Devine, Bad Books cradles a much more noticeable pop aesthetic and energy than either artist has probably ever showcased before. Nowhere is this more evident than in songs like “You Wouldn’t Have To Ask” and “Holding Down the Laughter”.
See below for tour dates, including one in NYC!

Free Download: Hurray for the Riff Raff + Tour Dates (including Brooklyn)

Hurray for the Riff Raff is a New Orleans based folk/blues rock trio. Some background:

The band started when a teenaged Alynda Lee Segarra began hopping trains, traveling across the country while learning to play banjo. Eventually she settled in New Orleans, and allowed music to take hold of her life. She quickly embraced the city's community of street musicians, who encouraged her to develop her banjo skills and sing old jazz songs. She was soon performing with traditional jazz bands on the sidewalks of the French Quarter, playing and singing while learning from the music of the city she loves.
They bring delicate wanderings of old souls and spirits from the past into the wide open spaces of consciousness. They are influenced by the sounds of classic country like Hank Williams Sr, 1960's Rock n Roll, and master singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young.

"Slow Walk" is from the band's latest album Young Blood Blues, released on August 1st.

They perform at Coco 66 in Brooklyn on Oct. 15 with Sam Doores and the Tumbleweeds. Full tour dates below.

Thursday enter studio for sixth album

Thursday is entering the studio to records its sixth album. As one of my favorite bands, not just in the post-hardcore realm, this is pleasing news. The band's most recent tour was opening for Converge in early May.

The band will spend the next few months recording at Tarbox Road Studios in Fredonia, NY with Common Existence and A City by the Light Divided producer Dave Fridmann (MGMT, The Flaming Lips, Mogwai) and plan to release the new album in spring 2011.
"We've worked with Dave Fridmann before, but this is definitely the most we've ever clicked with him," says singer Geoff Rickly. "In style, this record feels like a radical departure from our earlier records but in substance it feels like a return. The songs are more vulnerable than they've been in a long time. Some of the song titles include "A Darker Forest" and "Little Sparks Against the Sun"... It's very atmospheric and mood oriented so far." (via MySpace)

In related news, Geoff Rickly has released a 7'' vinyl for United Nations called Nevermind the Bombings, Here's Your Six Figures via Deathwish.
