Screaming Females, No Pasaran, Ben Franklin, Eula in Kearny, NJ on May 6th

I'm pleased to announce my former hometown of Kearny, NJ will witness a quadruple shot of rock when Screaming Females, No Pasaran, Ben Franklin, and Eula come to play there on May 6th. It's a Friday, one of the best days to go out, so why not catch a show? If the weather turns out nice that evening I'm going to plan a bike ride starting in Newark to the venue, The Irish at 95 Kearny Ave, a short 15-20 minute breeze of a ride. This show is being put together by the good folks at Killing Horse Records ,who house Ben Franklin and No Pasaran. Ben Franklin just dropped their wicked good 7'' single called Urgency and No Pasaran is in the studio working on their 7'' single to be released this summer. Eula is coming out from CT for this gig. I haven't heard them but the Facebook invite calls them noisey post-punk, which sounds good to me. Screaming Females, of course will bring the sweet licks and dancey bass for a dashing rock 'n' roll live show that will leave a jaw-dropping impression. 10 beans for this one.

Killing Horse Records showcase in Hoboken on Friday f/ Secret Country, Invisible Lines

Kearny, New Jersey based label  Killing Horse Records is throwing a 1-year anniversary show at good 'ol Maxwells in Hoboken this Friday. The showcase will feature punk influenced bands: Secret Country, iNoPasaran!, Invincible Lines, and Ben Franklin. Each band gives you a little bit of a different flavor of what we call punk and rock. 

Secret County (honky-tonk from Newark, NJ)

No Pasaran (post-punk from New Jersey)

Invisible Lines (post-punk, indie-rock from Kearny, NJ)

Ben Franklin (gonzo rock from Brooklyn, NY)

Free Music: 8/19 My Pet Dragon, The Micks, No Pasaran in Hoboken

If you're going to the Titus Andronicus and Free Energy show at Maxwell's or even if you're not swing by The shipyard Marina for The Pier Sessions tomorrow. The event features free musical performances by My Pet Dragon, The Micks, No Pasaran, and Roxi30, plus vendors, booze, and tacos! Rain or shine. Free. 6-10pm. 1301 Sinatra Drive (Shipyard Lane) next to NY/NJ Waterway. 

Pier Sessions is a grassroots effort to combine the wide range of creative talents of Hoboken and Jersey City to form a strong organization that can push the local music and art scene to infinite proportions. You will see bands play under a huge white wedding tent facing (actually on) the Hudson River and the evening's New York Skyline. There is grass and a dance floor for dancing, a bar, vendors and plenty of interesting people from the area. There is also an after party at DC's in Hoboken.

Live Review: No Pasarans & The Night Marchers @ Maxwell's 7-18-10

No Pasarans @ Maxwells

For a band that hasn't played together for 10 months, No Pasarans sure had it together. The band keeps post-punk alive in New Jersey with their unrelenting brand of rock. the Jersey City/ Hoboken based band features Eric Mason, also a member of the folk/rock band Secret Country. Here he played bass and  guitar and chopped away comfortably. The band opened for John Reis from Rocket From the Crypt, Drive Like Jeju, Hot Snakes, newest band, The Night Marchers. The three guys play in the vein of Fugazi, Q and Not U, Wire, and mix 80's punk like Naked Raygun and Pegboy. "Mobility at Last," was one of favorites of the set. This band needs to play more shows. I can imagine a nice line-up with No Pasarans, Screaming Females, and Black Wine. Don Giovanni Records and Killing Horse Records bands fit perfectly together!

The Night Marchers, who played the much larger Siren Festival the day before, got the crowd moving with their brand of rock 'n roll. The steady guitar prompted some shaking and headbanging. But singer John said that his band's music isn't made for dancing or something life that.Their set was garage-rock at its finest.
