Bio: Bern & the Brights formed in 2008 and have since been sharing their brand of danceable, romantic nerd-rock. Their first gig was held during the closing night of a local bookstore.  They have since acquired an unusual number of fans who are librarians, vagrant cafĂ© rats, and introverted record collectors.  Their sound can be described as familiar but fresh, warm, and feverously energetic. Their new record, Work, with its guitar-laden rock at the forefront, should be played loudly on a long drive.

Boy Things
Pop-Rock / Indie/ New Wave
Hackettstown, NJ

RIYL: Los Campesinos!, Interpol, Wolf Parade, Tegan and Sara, Tigers Jaw
Releases: Equations, June 19, 2012 (Bedside Manner); Boy Things EP & Growing Up cassette tape coming Summer 2012 (StarBeat Music)
Music: www.boythings.bandcamp.com

Bio:

Boy Things is a 5-piece Indie-Pop-Rock band from Hackettstown, NJ. This co-ed group of late teens/early twenty-somethings have been hard at work crafting their new wave of pop-rock over the last few years. Wait no, really this band has barely been together for 2 years and has found themselves all over the North Jersey scene rather quickly.

Since their inception in early 2011 the band has released 2 self-funded and digitally released EP's. All this hard work has paid off for them. Their latest EP, Equations was released through a combination of self funded, crowd-funded and label supported efforts to press a 7" vinyl. The band was able to get funds together for kids that do nothing but play music, had a good friend at Bedside Manner Collective throw a few bones their way and then to put the icing on the vinyl cake, the band was able to get almost 100 people to their vinyl fund-raising show at Bar 46 in their hometown in March 2012.

An eclectic swirl of new wave and indie pop rock, this dance rock quintet's good grooves and smooth rhythm will have anyone swaying their feet and shouting along. The juvenile entity that is Boy Things is a tribute to the youth and memories all of us have in our childhoods. "A good band progresses and changes (matures) with every album" and if this is what makes a good band, then Boy Things are running the course quite well. Every release this band has put out has gotten tighter, smoother, catchier, cleaner and this is only the beginning.

The band maintains a rock overtone with nods to indie-lo-fi-punk pop-new wave and pull it all together in an authentic way. The lyrics across the discography describe the sunsets and lessons we've all endured in beautiful imagery, while subtly peppering in the self-loathing that every new-wave band should have.

Boy Things is a band that will quickly turn heads with their new EP Equations on Bedside Manner Collective and fourthcoming summer cassette tape release on StarBeat Music. The band will be touring the Midwest/East Coast with Melissa & Paul from late July to the end of August but before then the band has six North Jersey dates in June.

Bio:

"Live Hard," released in April 2012 is Melissa & Paul's follow up to their 2011 debut, successfully fuses punk and blues with a touch of garage. Melissa's vocal performance lends itself to greats like Nancy Sinatra and Patti Smith and she would fit nicely with the '90's Riot Grrrl wave. Melissa & Paul fluctuate between a Screaming Females-esque sound and a "reverse White Stripes" yet not-so minimal vibe, while paying homage to greats like Hendrix and Nirvana. The 6-song EP sounds natural on tape and vinyl as the lo-fi and grainy sound compliments Melissa & Paul's raw and energetic performance that they actually did record in a garage.

Bio:

Those Mockingbirds is a 5-piece rock band from Montclair, NJ, formed in 2009. They appeal to the grunge fan, the indie rock fan, and the alternative rock fan with their sweet dose of catchy melodies, hooky lyrics, and heavy riffs. The dual vocals of guitarist Adam Bird and keyboardist/ violinist Tory Daines match perfectly together with the warm undertones of the classical styled instruments.

'Fa Sol La' is the edgier, evolved follow-up to the band’s 2010 debut pop-rock EP 'No Symmetry.' Bookended by two sparse instrumentals, the core of the EP is highlighted by the catchy “Coast to Coast,” the bittersweet “Don’t Stray, the circus-esque ”The Bloodiest Gums,” and the thought-provoking “We’re Animals. The EP was originally released as a free digital-download.

With three EP’s in their repertoire, an infamous cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” and a vinyl release of the latest release 'Fa Sol La' coming out, Those Mockingbirds is ready to fly.

Highlights:
  • New single "The Difference Between Love + Addiction" out now.
  • Nominated for best EP for 'Fa Sol La' in Hoboken Music Awards in 2011
  • Sold out show at Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ on Jan. 20, 2011
  • Debut EP No Symmetry topped Amazons Mover and Shakers Chart in 2010
