Album Review: Bridge & Tunnel keep it crafty, honest on 'Indoor Voices'

Bridge and Tunnel is one of those bands that consistently release great records. I've been listening to Indoor Voices for weeks. Ever since the songs were posted on PunkNews, I've been soaking up the goodness that is this new EP and since I bought the vinyl at the band's Cake Shop with Small Brown Bike in May, I've been enjoying the album in my record player. This album is simply awesome. I barely know what to write, but this release deserves as much credit as it can get. The guitar is always intricate and intriguing, and the dual male/female vocals coupled with the driving and melodic rhythms make the release compelling. Then there's the wonderful lyrics. The vocals are fairly clean with some screams here and there.

On "Predecessors" the band pays tribute to those who work. There's a nice note that goes along with it about how the elderly get neglected and unrecognized and deserve better. "Staples" is a touch heavier and one of my favorites. "New Dialogue" plays like a letter to a friend or lover, better yet loved one, but in song form. It's about being around for someone, being honest with them, and reminding them you care. Rachel takes lead vocals on this one. Her sweet, firm voice weaving nicely through the touching lyrics. "Room to Let" is a softer one where Jeff's vocals shine through nicely. Overall, this is a solid release from a tight band!

Indoor Voices is available on 10'' vinyl in various colors for only $8 from No Idea Records here.

Red Collar

October 22, 2009

Red Collar are one of the most intense live bands I've see. The way this 4-piece North Carolina band get into the music and interact on stage is amazing. So energetic, so fun to watch, and so passionate. This how a band should perform. Despite having a drummer with an injured hand, they still played and they still managed to sound great. This band knows how to rock with their catchy songs and heartfelt lyrics. Mike Jackson, Beth Kutchma, Jason Kutchma, and Jonathan Truesdale, bravo. Thanks for a kickass show.

Look Mexico

Bridge and Tunnel

The band played as part of the Syndicate/ Punknews.Org showcase. I also caught Look Mexico and Bridge & Tunnel who sounded great. I finally bought Bridge and Tunnel's bicycle t-shirt (see below) and got a sticker to. It was great conversing with Beth of Red Collar and Rachel and Tia of Bridge & Tunnel. The sound was excellent at The Studio. One of the coolest things was when Matt of Look Mexico got off stage during the set and sat on the floor, playing guitar and then slowly more people sat around him, including Rachel of Bridge & Tunnel and one his players. It was really great seeing an awesome set of bands!

Next, I headed to the Beyond Race Magazine showcase to see Bodega Girls and JEFF the brotherhood. Bodega Girls killed it again. This band know how to get people dancing. "Combat Zone" was awesome. They definitely put on a show. JEFF the brotherhood sounded great to with their garage rock sound. After, I headed to Music Hall of Williamsburg to see Mumford and Sons, an indie folk band from London with some great songs. I easily got into "The Cave." It's such a hopeful song: And I'll find strength in pain/ And I will change my ways/ I'll know my name as it's called again. It was great hearing banjo in their songs and boppin' about. After their set I ran to Glasslands Gallery for the Death+Taxes party that Real Estate was also on. The Vancouver garage rock duo, Japandroids would be performing. They played a great mix of songs off Post-Nothing including "Heart Sweats," "Crazy/Forever," and "Young Hearts Spark Fire." It was a fun night. I also grabbed of Dave's drum sticks that landed close to the stage.

See below for more pics with Red Collar, Look Mexico, Bridge & Tunnel, JEFF the brotherhood, Bodega Girls, Mumford & Sons, and Japandroids.

Des Ark, Bridge & Tunnel, Slingshot Dakota, and others @ Glass Door 8-30-09, pics

Carly of Slingshot Dakota @ Glass Door

On Sunday night I headed to Brooklyn for a show at the Glass Door featuring Des Ark, Bridge and Tunnel, Fellow Project, Slingshot Dakota, and The Motorcycle Industry. It was a fun show with each band showcasing their own style. The show was about friends, having a good time, speaking out, and good music. The show was running on punk rock time, so the first band didn’t start until 7:45pm, even though doors were at 6:30pm. Nonetheless, the show still managed to finish by 11pm. I was reminded of why I love punk rock and DIY shows.

The Motorcycle Industry opened the night with an energetic, passionate, and fun set. It was a special show because it was their first show in a few months. The cute, keyboard and drum goodness of Slingshot Dakota, Tom and Carly, were up with a sweet dose of energetic songs. It’s amazing how great this duo is. Drummer Tom was quite outspoken about rape and domestic violence, saying how you should always make sure sex is consensual and even in the punk rock community we need to be aware of what’s going on. Before “Michael Jordan Saved My Life” he also spoke about friends and how you should appreciate them and tell them you love them and give them support in their darkest times. This was incredible to me. How a band would speak out on these topics. It reminded me of my friends and how much I appreciate them. The song itself is really sweet with both Tom and Carly singing their own verse parts and also singing together. Lyrically it reflects what Tom was talking about with friends and how your friends can help you out of tough times. Other songs include "White Couch," "Until the Day I Die" and "The Golden Ghost." Carly said that she was really excited to be playing on the same show as Des Ark because when she saw them 4 or 5 years ago, she was impressed and inspired by them. She said something like, I lost my shit when I heard Aimee Argote sing.

More review and pics below.

Fellow Project was up next. Bassist and vocalist Tia had double duty or quadruple duty that night, as someone pointed out, because she also played in Bridge and Tunnel. The band played a good set.

Bridge and Tunnel were up next and last time I saw them was either in a basement in New Brunswick or with The Ergs! And Bomb the Music Industry! last summer. I remember how they reminded me of Thursday and Cursive. It was another fun set. Seeing guitarist Rachel play is always a treat.

Finally, Aimee Argote of Des Ark played an acoustic set to close the evening. She told stories, spoke with a southern accent at points, told jokes, and played her soft songs. Everyone managed to keep quiet. The band's website described the band appropriately: “Des Ark is a whole different animal. Aimee Argote’s work is backwoods hippy stuff that is profane and vulgar as any lady has ever been. Her compositions are organic songs that are driven by her soulful voice holding strongly to its southern accent and are driven by acoustic guitars and pianos. If it was not for the grotesquely vulgar and overtly bi-sexual nature of her songs, they would be among the most gorgeous ever composed.”

Bridge and Tunnel will in Hoboken, New Jersey this Saturday for an acoustic evening with Kevin Seconds, Jack Terricloth (World Inferno Friendship Society), Gimme Drugs, and Calderon. The band also open for Bayside, Envy on the Coast, and I am the Avalance on Oct. 1. The Motorcycle Arcade has an NYC gig in October and Slingshot Dakota return to the Glass Door on the 18th for their tour kickoff show.
