Carly of Slingshot Dakota @ Glass Door
On Sunday night I headed to Brooklyn for a show at
the Glass Door featuring
Des Ark,
Bridge and Tunnel,
Fellow Project,
Slingshot Dakota, and
The Motorcycle Industry. It was a fun show with each band showcasing their own style. The show was about friends, having a good time, speaking out, and good music. The show was running on punk rock time, so the first band didn’t start until 7:45pm, even though doors were at 6:30pm. Nonetheless, the show still managed to finish by 11pm. I was reminded of why I love punk rock and DIY shows.
The Motorcycle Industry opened the night with an energetic, passionate, and fun set. It was a special show because it was their first show in a few months. The cute, keyboard and drum goodness of Slingshot Dakota, Tom and Carly, were up with a sweet dose of energetic songs. It’s amazing how great this duo is. Drummer Tom was quite outspoken about rape and domestic violence, saying how you should always make sure sex is consensual and even in the punk rock community we need to be aware of what’s going on. Before “Michael Jordan Saved My Life” he also spoke about friends and how you should appreciate them and tell them you love them and give them support in their darkest times. This was incredible to me. How a band would speak out on these topics. It reminded me of my friends and how much I appreciate them. The song itself is really sweet with both Tom and Carly singing their own verse parts and also singing together. Lyrically it reflects what Tom was talking about with friends and how your friends can help you out of tough times. Other songs include "White Couch," "Until the Day I Die" and "The Golden Ghost." Carly said that she was really excited to be playing on the same show as Des Ark because when she saw them 4 or 5 years ago, she was impressed and inspired by them. She said something like, I lost my shit when I heard Aimee Argote sing.

Fellow Project was up next. Bassist and vocalist Tia had double duty or quadruple duty that night, as someone pointed out, because she also played in Bridge and Tunnel. The band played a good set.
Bridge and Tunnel were up next and last time I saw them was either in a basement in New Brunswick or with The Ergs! And Bomb the Music Industry! last summer. I remember how they reminded me of Thursday and Cursive. It was another fun set. Seeing guitarist Rachel play is always a treat.
Finally, Aimee Argote of Des Ark played an acoustic set to close the evening. She told stories, spoke with a southern accent at points, told jokes, and played her soft songs. Everyone managed to keep quiet. The band's website described the band appropriately: “Des Ark is a whole different animal. Aimee Argote’s work is backwoods hippy stuff that is profane and vulgar as any lady has ever been. Her compositions are organic songs that are driven by her soulful voice holding strongly to its southern accent and are driven by acoustic guitars and pianos. If it was not for the grotesquely vulgar and overtly bi-sexual nature of her songs, they would be among the most gorgeous ever composed.”
Bridge and Tunnel will in Hoboken, New Jersey this Saturday for an acoustic evening with Kevin Seconds, Jack Terricloth (World Inferno Friendship Society), Gimme Drugs, and Calderon. The band also open for Bayside, Envy on the Coast, and I am the Avalance on Oct. 1. The Motorcycle Arcade has an NYC gig in October and Slingshot Dakota return to the Glass Door on the 18th for their tour kickoff show.

Slingshot Dakota played Cheeky's last show at Death By Audio. The show proved to be a fun time. The audience was treated to 7 songs, including all of their latest Demo #3. The duo dedicated their cover of Fugazi's "Waiting Room" to Cheeky. Tom also spoke about how great is it to have an all ages venue in Brooklyn and that we should turn to our friends if we are dealing with rape or sexual assault or really any problem and then played "Ohio" and "Michael Jordan Saved My Life." It was great hearing the lighter "I-78," which closed the set where Carly sang "If you're with me, let's get up and get going! C'mon let's go. C'mon let's go." This cute duo use just drums and keyboard providing a fun, yet sweet show. I found myself moving around and shaking my head. You can download the demo here.
