Bridge & Tunnel to support The Gaslight Anthem in September

Bridge & Tunnel will play a a week of dates with The Gaslight Anthem this September. The band is also playing Brooklyn

The Gaslight Anthem to play Radio City Music Hall, release new album today

The Gaslight Anthem has announced a show at Radio City Music Hall on September 30th. This comes on the day of their new release, American Slang. Tickets go on general on-sale Friday June 25th at noon EST. Tonight the band performs a sold-out show with Rival Schools and Tim Barry. The band also performs at The Stone Pony with William Elliott Witmore and Frank Turner on Aug. 9 at the venue's outdoors space.

American Slang is the kind of album that you like at first and love as the play count rises. My experience with The Gaslight Anthem is minimal (actually, nonexistent), but the first time I heard American Slang, I could picture what their shows must be like--beyond sweaty or smelly, but fun. The kind of show you go to with someone you kind of like, someone you’re nervous about dancing in front of, but you dance anyway because the music just makes you. Most of the songs on the album are like that--upbeat, fun. “Queen of Lower Chelsea” and “We Did It When We Were Young” are two exceptions, but they’re enjoyable, and for slow songs, they still keep an obvious beat, like a lowered pulse. The life never leaves the album.

Wikipedia tells me The Gaslight Anthem “embraces many elements of the Jersey Shore sound.” I guess that’s true, but upon first listen, I didn’t associate them with the Jersey Shore at all. They remind me of what an Against Me! song would sound like if it reached middle age, lost the anger and the urgency, and learned to enjoy the seemingly mundane pleasures of life--family, friends, love, and the simple fact of being alive. A lot of my New Brunswick friends have talked to me about The Gaslight Anthem, how they skipped the chance to see them play in our hometown and regretted it now. I can see why. American Slang is great. I didn’t listen to The Gaslight Anthem before, but I do now.

Brian Fallon (of Gaslight Anthem) to perform at Court Tavern + other upcoming shows

Brian Fallon of The Gaslight is performing at New Brunswick's Court Tavern on May 7th. He's known to play solo songs, Gaslight song, and Bruce Springsteen covers. Also performing is PJ Bond and Communication Redlight. Doors are at 9pm.

Tonight Jonah Matranga (of Far) and Last days of Empire are at Court. On April 24 it's Ex Number Five (reunion), Let Me Run, and Communication Redlight. May 15 Fun Machine celebrates their new release. On May 22 Vision and Killing Time. June 3rd it's Lemuria, Invisible Lines, and Black Wine. The Gaslight Anthem post first single

The Gaslight Anthem have posted the first single from their upcoming album of the same name, "American Slang" on their MySpace page. The album will be released on June 15 and feature 10 songs. The band played new song "Bring It On" at their show in Montclair, NJ on Dec. 11, 2009. A review from that show can be read here.

The Gaslight Anthem played their last show of the year to an enthusiastic, sold out crowd on Friday night in the bands home state. The show was a testament to the growth they've made since forming in 2005 when they played basement shows and small clubs. The Wellmont Theatre in Montclair hosted 2,000 fans for a night that opened with what Brian Fallon said was a bunch of the band’s friends- The Hold Outs, Communication Redlight, and Vision.

The band's 90 minute set consisted of most of the New Brunswick natives discography. They played a nice mix of songs from their latest '59 Sound and older album Sink or Swim, as well as from their Senor and the Queen ep. The crowd sang along, crowd surfed, and most people sitting in the balcony stood up during the encore set.

From the lovely "Old White Lincoln" to the single "The '59 Sound" the band was tight and the set highlighted the band's driving music and compelling lyrics plus their folk, punk, and rock influences. The band's music, particularly on Sink or Swim capture the lush, danceable, romanticism of the Jersey Shore sound. Songs like "Wooderson," and "1930" are ones that make for great driving music with special people. "We Came to Dance" is the perfect Jersey song for two kids in love hanging out "under the central Jersey sky." There was a crispness and sincerity from the band I haven't seen in a long time.

The 8 song encore was most impressive featuring a new song, a Tom Petty cover, and songs from all 3 of their releases. It's funny they played a new one considering Fallon's earlier statement. He announced the band was writing new songs but couldn't play any because someone could record them. They closed it with "The Backseat."

Fallon later said via twitter:

thank you all so much for last night it was the best show to end a great year for us! and, it was a new song. It's called "bring it on.''

Communication Redlight put on a good show. Vision reminded me of great punk/hardcore, especially with "Close Minded." The singer seemed to use his mic stand as compensation for a lack of a guitar, but was intense and consistent.

Just last year this month the band played a secret show at the Court Tavern. Brian Fallon returns their on Dec. 23 to perform solo at Andy Diamond's Christmas show with Let Me Run, The Sirs, and Communication Redlight (see flier under "read more"). Fallon also has a string of dates lined up for the new year.

The Gaslight Anthem are one of those band's that makes me proud to be from New Jersey. They make great rock tunes that aren't overdone, but sincere and bring in different influences yet maintain a cohesive sound. They are one of Jersey's best. Keep up the anthem, gaslight!

The Gaslight Anthem's last show of year is in NJ

The Gaslight Anthem have announced a home state show that most Jerseyians were probably waiting for. On Dec. 11 the New Brunswick 4-piece will play its final show of the year at Monclair's Wellmont Theatre. The band had the following to say:

It's been a pretty crazy year and a half since THE '59 SOUND came out, it really has. We are immensely grateful to all of you....we know that everything we've been lucky enough to experience as a band couldn't have happened at all without your love and support. Thank you, each and every one of you.

The band is currently on tour with Murder by Death, The Loved Ones, and The Measure (SA). Two weeks ago the band played Bowery Presents spacious, three floor venue Terminal as well as Williamsburg's new bowling alley/venue Brooklyn Bowl.

Tickets for the Dec. 11 are available here. Openers will be announced in the weeks to come. Expect possible Pearl Jam, Hot Water Music, or Bruce Springsteen covers and a rockin' set featuring a nice mix of songs off '59 Sound, Sink or Swim, and Senor and the Queen.

All Points West Festival Guide: Tips & Who to See

From rappers to electro acts to indie rock to comedy, this weekend's All Points West Festival in Jersey City looks to be a happening, diverse time. With so many performers and some slight scheduling conflict, including complaints with the overlap in times from Coldplay, MGMT, and Ghostland Observatory, it can be tough to figure out what acts to see. Despite, being a New Jersey festival, there are only two Jersey acts, Steel Train and The Gaslight Anthem. However, there are a number of New York based acts like Gogol Bordello, Ra Ra Riot, We Are Scientists, The Postelles, and big timers Yeah Yeah Yeahs and MGMT. But first, we offer some tips for how to survive the festival.

Tips for Festival Go-ers:

1. Eat before you go to the festival. Food and beverages will probably be expensive, so it's a good idea to at least have something beforehand, so that you're not hungry or thirsty during the first few hours of the fest.

2. Wear comfortable attire and shoes. With three stages, you'll be bouncing around from stage to stage, so make sure your wear comfortable clothing and shoes so your feet aren't sore by the end of the day. Flip-flops or heels may not be the greatest choice, so stick with some kicks. It might rain so be ready for that to.

3. Figure out your show schedule beforehand. Schedules have already been released so print out a copy and list all the acts you want to see. You can see the time, act, and stage conveniently this way.

4. Make sure to bring enough money. You'll need money for food, drinks, and perhaps merchandise. So stop by the ATM before you get there. The vendors will only accept cash, so be ready.

5. Drink plenty of water. It'll be hot, don't dehydrate or underestimate your thirst.

Steel Train

For their work on “Twilight Tales from the Prairies of the Sun,” Steel Train was once known as a jam band. Some still recognize the band best as a cover band, due to their 2003 release “1969,” an EP consisting of songs from--you guessed it--1969. But, no longer; years past, Steel Train has finally found their sound. The spotless bouncing pop of “I Feel Weird” to the more melancholy “Women I Belong To” bookend the 2007 release “Trampoline.” Reflective lyrics avoid the nonsense present in many of their contemporaries’ music, and the good clean pop music will have you dancing along.

Their stage presence is perhaps the most incredible part of the band--many have been turned into fans after seeing even a short set. The band’s energy is infectious.

Steel Train has toured with bands including Dear and the Headlights, The Format, The Hush Sound, Kevin Devine, and The Spill Canvas. They look to a fall release date for an as-yet-untitled album, and will be heading out on a tour with Sherwood, Hellogoodbye, and legendary 90s-band Hanson.

Root for the home team--go see Steel Train this weekend at All Points West. It won’t be the last.

The Gaslight Anthem

New Brunswick's own folk/punk rock act, Gaslight Anthem easily take influence from the Garden's state's own Bruce Springsteen. The band has even toured with the Boss himself. The comparisons don't stop, but Neil Young is also included in the band's influence list. Coming from a scene that fostered underground punk acts, Gaslight has managed to embrace their hometown roots and reflect their love for Jersey both in sound and lyrics. Their song "We Came to Dance" goes: "And if they end it all, By the end of tonight, If the big bomb drops down, Over this quiet Edison sky. We'll blow one last kiss, To all the beautiful nights like this, Under these central Jersey sky."

With a sincere delivery that shines through nicely on the band's latest, The '59 Sound, Brian Fallon and co. indeed have "great expectations" for their performance. This fall they'll be headlining a U.S. tour with Murder by Death and the Loved Ones.

Gogol Bordello

Quite possibly one of the funnest band on the festival, gypsy punksters Gogol Bordello make you want to dance. Bringing together a brand of music that is both catchy and crazy with instruments such as violin and accordian played fast, these New York lads are a band not to miss live. If you live World/Inferno Friendship Society or Flogging Molly, then Gogol is the band for you. So get ready to move and get sweaty.

The Measure (SA) to tour with The Gaslight Anthem in October plus tour dates

New Brunswick's pop/punk 4-piece The Measure (SA) will tour with The Gaslight Anthem, Murder by Death, and the Loved Ones this October for a string of dates starting in in Richmond, Virginia and ending in Columbus, Ohio. This is a nice opportunity for the band who shares similar roots with their hometown fellows in Gaslight. Local folks can see the band on Day 1 of the Hub City Hardcore Fest with Psyched to Die, Static Radio NJ, and others. More info on that is available here.

Also, the Gaslight Anthem will be performing on day 3 of All Points West Festival headlined by Coldplay. There's no NYC or Jersey date for the band's upcoming tour, but I think they'll be announcement after APW.

Brian Fallon (singer of the Gaslight Anthem) will perform an intimate solo show at New Brunswick’s Court Tavern on January 24, a venue the band used to play before they started blowing up. Then his band headlines a European and North American tour.

It’s amazing when the bands in your town become popular. It’s kind of a rush when you can say, I saw that band at a basement show and now they’re huge. Or I was friends with the guitarist or I ate dinner with the band. Or I was at the band’s first show. I remember when My Chemical Romance was playing the Loop Lounge in Passaic, NJ and a handful to 50 kids would show up. They’ve now played the venue of all venues, Madison Square Garden. The band is practically from my hometown, Newark, but more appropriate they are from Kearney and Belleville, New Jersey.

For one Jersey kid who enjoys going to shows and recently got into the New Brunswick scene, it’s incredible to see The Gaslight Anthem making their mark. Last year the band released “The 59 Sound,” which is on plenty of top album release for 2008 lists, opened for Rise Against, Thrice, and Alkaline Trio, performed on Conan O’Brien, and opened for the Bouncing Souls, just to name some highlights.

Tickets for the Gaslight Anthem’s show at Webster Hall on March 27 go on-sale this Friday at noon. Heartless Bastards will open. Tickets available here.
