60s inspired queer rock band Hunx & His Punx release video, announce tour dates
Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever "girl group" fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as "Young Oldies", a mixture of 50s teenage rock n roll, 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.
How awesome does that sound? They are like Ramones meets The Supremes or The Shirelles. So good. They just released a video of one of my favorite tracks called "Lovers Lane." Seth Bogart and Shannon Shaw's are right on in this track.
Tour dates below.

RVIVR East Coast Tour Dates
Today begin's RVIVR's east coast tour and I couldn't be more stoked. They hold a warm spot in my heart for delivering sing-along pop-punk songs that I can move around to and have meaning to me. They start their month long tour in NYC for three dates with the likes of Bridge & Tunnel, Big Eyes, Aye Nako, and Worriers. RVIVR is highly recommended. They recently released the Joester Sessions, a collection of their Derailer Benefit 7'', Life Moves 7'', and their U.K. only Dirty Water 12'', including a new song. Check out "Cut the Chord" and "Seethin'."

Aaron P (of Chairlift) starts Rewards, touring with Warpaint (mp3's, tour dates)
Aaron Pfenning co-founder of the band Chairlift has taken it solo. His new music is called Rewards. Aaron plays all the instruments, plus produces and engineers all the music. He's currently touring in the U.K. with Brooklyn's own We Are Scientists and will come back to the U.S. for an east coast run with L.A's Warpaint. Make sure to check him out in the stellar sounding Studio or Music Hall. His songs are sunny pleasant, pop with synthesized rhythms, and '80s dark wave vibes. Pretty nice compliment to Warpaint!

Rubblebucket releasing new EP, announce Triangular Tour (NYC 11/5)
Rubblebucket, Brooklyn's 8-piece band, will release the Triangular Daisies EP on Oct. 19th. New York and Burlington fans will get to experience the band differently. They'll team up with Hack Interactive "to create an interactive, mulimedia stage design experience." They'll be in NYC on Nov. 5 with The Pimps of Joytime. Tickets are just $10. More info here.
Since the band formed in 2007, pinning down their sound has remained a difficult task. At times, the band sounds like Brooklyn’s answer to Fela Kuti, with frenetic afrobeat rhythms rubbing elbows with infectious indie-pop hooks and catchy synths. Frontwoman/saxophonist Kalmia Travers explains, "We're children of this noisy age, with access to so much music from across time and space. We soak up all the sounds. What comes out can be unpredictable, but it will be uniquely ours." Uniquely their own, indeed.

The So So Glos are staying true to their DIY roots as they release their new 5-song EP, Low Back Chain Shift on Oct. 12 via Green Owl. The band is touring the 5 boroughs from Oct. 21-25, including an Oct. 22 Force Field PR CMJ showcase at Piano's. These shows look mighty packed, fun, and awesome.
Along the way, the Glos have earned a reputation for a ripping live show, which they've brought to all-ages clubs, fans' kitchens, scene fundraisers and traditional venues alike. They've also constructed (literally) a new performance space and HQ, Shea Stadium, which has hosted punk rock fetes as well as overnight dance parties with Danceteria and avant 1980s DJs. October brings a fresh EP recorded at the Rare Book Room by Nicolas Vernhes (Deerhunter, Fiery Furnaces, Animal Collective). Naturally, it's named Low Back Chain Shift, after a distinct facet of the New York drawl.

Darren Hanlon (free download, tour dates including CMJ & Corin Tucker)
DOWNLOAD: Darren Hanlon- All These Things
It's hard not to love Darren Hanlon's accent. His Australian voice is pleasant. When he sings it's lovely. "Staying locked inside all day is no big deal...those things will follow you...their lights will shine bright through..." he sings on "All These Things." The consistent guitar strum is wonderful. The song is from his folk-rock-pop album, I Will Love You At All.
See below for tour dates.
The record, recorded by Adam Selzer (M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists), features Rachel Blumberg (Bright Eyes, M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists) on drums, as well as longtime Portland-based collaborator Cory Gray (Carcrashlander, Norfolk and Western) on keys, was created away from Hanlon’s native home, and was partially written in the studio—a departure for the artist. Reinforcing the album’s sweet nature are more of Portland’s finest—dual female vocalists Shelley Short and Alia Farah. He'll perform at Bowery Electric for CMJ on Oct. 21 and 22, and then open for Corin Tucker on Oct. 26 at the esteemed Bowery Ballroom.

Spotlight: Heavy Cream
I first heard of Nashville's Heavy Cream at last year's CMJ music marathon at the Charleston where the ladies would play the Infinity Cat Records showcase alongside JEFF: the Brotherhood, Sisters, and many more. Corin Tucker releasing new album, playing Bowery & Maxwell's in October
DOWNLOAD: Corin Tucker: Doubt
Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney fame is releasing a new album this fall called 1,000 Years on October 5 through Kill Rock Stars. Shortly after the release she'll head on a small tour including dates on the east coast. Of note, is a show at Maxwell's in Hoboken on Oct. 23 and Bowery Ballroom In NYC on Oct. 26. Tickets for Maxwell's available here and for Bowery Ballroom here.
...“1,000 Years” reveals the one-time Riot Grrrl as she is nearly 20 years after she began her career: as a full-grown Riot Woman. Old enough to trace the complexities of adult life, love and family, but still young enough to know better.
Cue the wrenching rhythms and hard-angle melodies, the slashing guitars and wildly passionate vocals. Only now the hard edges come nestled in lush weaves of acoustic guitars, keyboards, interlocking percussion, even cellos and violins.
“That’s the artistic, itchy personality,” Tucker says. “You’re constantly trying to do something different.”
Tour dates below.

Australian duo The Fumes playing 4 NYC shows, new album out
Two piece rock n' roll bands seem to be all the rage nowadays. There's Japandroids, JEFF: the Brotherhood, The Naked Heroes, and Trophy Wife, among others. But now there's the Fumes, a gritty bluesy rock duo from Australia. The band's new album Automobile dropped this week and features 14 songs that'll comfort your blues.
The Fumes play two back-to-back 10pm shows at Rockwood Music Hall's stage 2 this Thursday and Friday. That's followed by two Brooklyn dates. Sept. 1st they're at D.I.Y venue Death By Audio, then a gig gig at Rock Shop with Black Bells and TAB: the band (Joe Perry of Aerosmith's son's band who are opening up on the Stone Temple Pilots tour). Tickets are only $8 here. Get out to a show. It looks to be pretty gnarly.

Bad Books (Andy Hull + Kevin Devine)
DOWNLOAD: Bad Books – “You Wouldn’t Have To Ask”
Bad Books is the side project of Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull. The two emotionally passionate musicians have performed, toured, and collaborated together before, but this time they team up for a full album release and short tour. The self-titled album will be released on October 19th through Favorite Gentlemen Recordings. Grab a free download of the band's first single above and also stream a new song called "Please Move" here.

As songwriters go, Hull and Devine could not be further apart in terms of creative approach. The methodical wordsmith Devine, an English major from Fordham, is known to pine away for great lengths of time just to accurately pin-point one word within a lyric. “I was doing a take of ‘You’re A Mirror I Cannot Avoid’ and stopped myself for fifteen minutes because I was having trouble justifying ending two lines in the same chorus with the word ‘back.’ Just sitting there, staring at the screen, writing different word choices. I asked Andy if he thought it mattered, and he said, ‘Of course it doesn’t.’ Somewhere in that exchange is I think what differentiates us as songwriters. I think Andy trusts his instincts to lead him to the right place in a song, and sometimes I want to outthink my instincts because I’m scared of repeating myself, of resting on my laurels. And I think together, those two approaches meshed really, really well,” Devine said.See below for tour dates, including one in NYC!
Hull echoes that sentiment: “Kevin is very meticulous, where I came in with a few ideas and fleshed them out literally as we were recording. Kevin’s songs were awesome and he was cool enough for me to throw in some ideas to change a part or add a bridge here or there.”
In contrast to previous outputs from Manchester Orchestra and Devine, Bad Books cradles a much more noticeable pop aesthetic and energy than either artist has probably ever showcased before. Nowhere is this more evident than in songs like “You Wouldn’t Have To Ask” and “Holding Down the Laughter”.
