10/13 Bern & the Brights CD Release & StarBeat Music 1-Year Anniversary Show in Montclair, NJ

On October 13th we will be celebrating our 1-Year Anniversary as a label with a record release show for Bern & the Brights CD EP Work. The show will happen at Tierney's in Montclair with performances by Plastiq Passion and The Micks. Work shows a strong musical maturation for the 4-piece have developed their sound into a vibrant brand of rock that weaves together folk, reggae, new wave and pop across these 7 songs. Come join in the magic for a wonderful night of music.

Plastiq Passion: all grrrl new wave rock

For Day 2 of our Women's History Month homage to artists and bands, I present you Plastiq Passion. I saw this 4-piece last month at feminist group Permanent Wave's first event at Death by Audio. Their performance was stellar.

Plastiq Passion is a band I've wanted to write about for a while. Since I first heard them on Rich Russo's radio program "Anything, Anything" on WRXP 101.9, I knew that they were something special. Their music sounded passionate, melodic, catchy, and danceable. A band this good deserves an apt description but honestly I'm not sure how to describe them much outside of simply what the band calls themselves: new wave/rock/pop punk. All I can really say is that this band is really good. Their stand out tracks on their album, To Be A Blade of Grass In Crached Cement, is "Girl," "Not Long Ago," and "I Can't Wait," which is my favorite." Not Long Ago" has some dancey guitar groove and drums that make you shake around with vocals that you want to sing along. "I Can't Wait" starts with an awesome audible bass line and steady drum beat and booms with a bold opening line: "And I'm done waiting for you/ So much time wasted/And now I'm through thinking of you." My best description of the band is like Team Dresch meets New Wave.

Permanent Wave's First Feminist Performance Series this Sunday in Brooklyn

A new feminist group started by Amy Klein of Titus Andronicus called Permanent Wave is hosting its first event this Sunday at Death By Audio in Brooklyn and you're invited! I am in the group and also helped organize this event along with a bunch of awesome ladies, too. We'll have bands, poets, artwork, baked goods, and activities. It's a benefit for The Center Against Domestic Violence. Plastiq Passion, P.S. XO, Noon:30, and Emilyn Brodsky will be performing. Just $7. 

In the back room you can view an art show featuring work by Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females, get information from For the Birds and Babeland, and engage in other neat activities! 

Finally, we'll have baked goods for sale, Tom Tom Magazines, and silk-screened prints of our event poster. Bands will be selling merch and For the Birds will have cd's, books, and other neats things for sale, too! 

This is more than just a show. Come out and rock for a cause, have fun, and revolutionionalize your Super Bowl Sunday.

Permanent Wave presents: Plastiq Passion, noon:30, P.S. XO + poets, art (Brooklyn 2/6)

Dear Friends,

I've had the honor of working with Amy Klein of Titus Andronicus and several other awesome ladies, collectively known as Permanent Wave, to host a feminist performance live series called "Sound Wave." The event is happening on Feb. 6th at Death By Audio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It will feature music by Plastiq Passion, P.S. XO, Noon:30, and Emilyn Brodsky; poetry by Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai and Hanelei Ramos; and artwork by Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females.

Permanent Wave is a feminist group of diverse individuals who know that women are more than groupies and merch girls. We value art from female and LGBTQ people that challenges the norm. We believe that women should see other women as collaborators and inspirations, not rivals. We want to rip the band-aid off the halted conversations and change the way women are treated. Permanent Wave's live concert series is just one way to get things rolling.

The event is a benefit to support the Center Against Domestic Violence in Brooklyn. The theme of the show is relationship violence. Studies show that every year domestic violence is at a high on Superbowl Sunday. The event seeks to bring many groups of people together for an informative, fun, and visual and aural experience in  a safe environment.
